    Hi @Shaylee Adams  ,

    Welcome to the Q&A Community

I’m here to assist your problem.

Based on your description, I'll answer for your question:

It looks like you're running into a common issue with the recent Microsoft Teams update (rolled out around November 2024), where the "Delete" option for entire one-on-one or group chats has been removed from the desktop app's three-dot menu (next to the chat name). Instead, you'll only see options like "Hide," "Mute," or "Pin." This change appears to be intentional, possibly to align with data retention policies, reduce accidental deletions, or encourage hiding for a cleaner interface without permanently removing chat history from Microsoft's servers.

You can try "Remove Chat History" by clicking three dots beside person you want to delete chat - Click "Remove" to remove a chat:

You can still fully delete chats using the Microsoft Teams mobile app (on iOS or Android), and the deletion will sync across all your devices, including desktop. Here's how:

    1. Open the Teams app on your phone: Make sure it's updated to the latest version, and you're signed in with the same account.
    2. Go to the Chats tab: Find the chat you want to delete (with the specific person).
    3. Tap and hold the chat: Or tap the three-dot menu (...) next to the chat name.
    4. Select "Delete": Confirm the prompt. This will permanently remove the chat from your view, though other participants will still see it unless they delete it too.
    5. Sync back to desktop: Close and reopen Teams on your computer (or wait a few minutes for sync). The chat should now be gone from your desktop as well.

If the chat reappears (e.g., due to a new message), repeat the process.

Note: This only deletes the chat for you so files, messages, or shared content may still be accessible via OneDrive or search if permissions allow.

    • If you're on Teams Free (personal account): The process is similar, but meeting chats might affect call access for others if you're the organizer.
    • Admin restrictions: If this is a work/school account, your IT admin might have disabled deletions via retention policies. Check with them or look in the Teams admin center under Messaging policies > "Delete chat" (it should be toggled on).

Delete individual messages instead: If you just need to remove specific messages (not the whole chat), hover over the message > three dots > Delete. This works on desktop and shows "This message has been deleted" to others.

We appreciate your kind patience and understanding that sometimes the initial response may not immediately resolve the issue or there may be some misunderstandings about your scenario, but we would love to hear updates from you and find out further suggestions.

Thank you for your kindness and understanding. If you need anything else, please feel free to contact me.
