How can I plan a meeting out of a group chat, where the original group chat becomes the meeting chat?

I have a group chat with a few collegues. We met a few times over "meet now", where the group chat was the chat of the meeting aswell. We wanted to plan our next meetings, so I created a meeting series out of the group chat. In the new meeting, there was a new chat attached to this meeting and the conference in this meeting was not the same room as when I press "meet now".

My expectation was: When I plan a meeting (series) out of a group chat, this chat becomes the meeting chat and the confrerence is the same when I press meet now.

Am I doing something wrong? How can I connect an existing group chat to a new meeting?

    Hello @Benjamin Obst,

Good day! Thank you for posting your valuable question on Microsoft Q&A forum.

You're absolutely right to be concern about this problem, as it is a known behavior in Microsoft Teams:

    • "Meet Now" in a Group Chat: When you click "Meet Now" from a group chat, the meeting is directly tied to that chat. Everyone in the chat is invited, and the meeting chat is the same as the group chat.
    • Scheduled Meeting from a Group Chat: When you schedule a meeting (even from within a group chat), Teams creates a new meeting object with its own separate meeting chat. This is by design, since scheduled meetings are treated as standalone events.

Unfortunately, you can't directly link a scheduled meeting to an existing group chat in a way that makes the group chat the meeting chat. But here are a few workarounds:

Use “Meet Now” and Copy the Link

This keeps the meeting chat tied to the group chat.

    • Go to the group chat.
    • Click Meet Now.
    • Copy the meeting link and send it to participants or add it to a calendar invite manually.

Schedule the Meeting and Use the Group Chat for Discussion

    • Schedule the meeting as usual.
    • Use the original group chat for pre- and post-meeting discussions.
    • You can paste the meeting link into the group chat for quick entering.
