Mouse/Keyboard don’t work after waking computer

Every so often, my computer will not allow my mouse or keyboard to give any input after awaking from sleep. The keyboard/mouse get power to light up (I have an RGB Keyboard) but the keyboard will not give any input to the system so that I can put my password in and my mouse won’t let me select a profile to access my account. The issue only seems to happen on the USB ports directly on my motherboard, the case USB drives will work just fine. When I restart my computer all ports work like normal.

I have already gone into power settings to allow the computer to be woken by these devices and I have already turned off the option to allow the computer to turn off my USB ports to save power but the issue is still happening. Would love some assistance in solving this.

Hi, thanks for posting here in Microsoft community, I understand how inconvenient it is when your keyboard and mouse stop working after sleep. From what you described, the root cause is likely tied to how the motherboard’s USB ports handle power states during sleep.

Even though the devices light up, the system may not reinitialize those ports correctly when waking up. Since you’ve already adjusted power settings, the next step is to check if USB selective suspend is disabled in your advanced power settings and confirm that your chipset and USB drivers are fully updated from the manufacturers site.

Also, review your BIOS settings to ensure USB wake support is enabled and that power management options aren’t restricting those ports. If the issue only happens on certain motherboard ports, try testing with different ones to rule out a hardware level problem.

Have you noticed if this happens after a specific duration of sleep or only intermittently? And do you have any third-party USB hubs or devices connected that might affect wake behavior? If these steps don’t resolve it, we can look into updating the BIOS or adjusting advanced sleep states like S3 or S4. Let me know what you find so we can narrow this down.

I hope this helps you out, let me know how it goes.

It sounds like you're experiencing an issue with your USB devices not functioning properly after waking your computer from sleep. Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:

    1. Check Device Manager Settings: Ensure that the USB devices are allowed to wake the computer. You can do this by going to Device Manager, right-clicking on your USB devices (like your keyboard and mouse), selecting Properties, and then checking the Power Management tab to ensure that "Allow this device to wake the computer" is enabled.
    2. Disable USB Selective Suspend: Since you've already turned off the option to allow the computer to turn off USB ports to save power, you might also want to check the power settings in the Control Panel. Go to Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings, and look for USB settings. Set "USB selective suspend setting" to Disabled.
    3. Update Drivers: Make sure that your USB drivers and chipset drivers are up to date. You can check the manufacturer's website for the latest drivers.
    4. Check for Windows Updates: Sometimes, issues like these can be resolved with system updates. Make sure your Windows is up to date.
    5. Try Different USB Ports: Since you mentioned that the case USB drives work fine, try using different USB ports on the motherboard to see if the issue persists. It could be a problem with specific ports.
    6. BIOS Settings: Check your BIOS settings to ensure that USB ports are enabled and configured correctly. Sometimes, settings related to power management can affect how USB devices behave after sleep.

If the problem continues, it may be worth looking into whether specific USB devices are not compatible with your system's power management settings.
