Opening and reading PDF files in Microsoft Edge on Windows 10
This browser is no longer supported.
Upgrade to Microsoft Edge to take advantage of the latest features, security updates, and technical support.
Since Saturday, 12/6/25, I have been having issues adding text to PDF documents in Microsoft Edge's PDF Viewer
Whenever I try to add text, the text box appears with a strange font I haven't seen before. When I type text into the box and click away, the text appears in a completely different font and starts wrapping/ words disappear
I have had this problem once before in the past and was able to fix it. This time, I tried disabling/re-enabling the New PDF Viewer in the Flags. I also turned off graphics acceleration, tried different documents, reset my Edge settings multiple times, restarted my computer multiple times, and waited to try everything again this morning
None of these solutions have worked. Is there any way to restore the previous, usable version of the PDF Viewer? I rely on the PDF Viewer heavily for my work and need a fix ASAP, please advise
Thank you
Opening and reading PDF files in Microsoft Edge on Windows 10
The fix:
Go to Edge Settings → Appearance.
Scroll down to Fonts and set these 4 options as the same:
Standard font: Arial
Serif font: Arial
Sans-serif font: Arial
Fixed-width font: Arial
(You could try using any other Font, but I only tested Arial.)
Open edge://flags/ → click Reset all → restart Edge.
Go back to Edge, open once again edge://flags/ → search for “New PDF viewer” → set it to Disabled → restart Edge again.
That should fix the issue.
Hi,
The font-switching and text-wrapping issue in Edge’s PDF Viewer is caused by a bug in the latest PDF rendering engine, not by your settings. Microsoft removed the old viewer, so you can’t fully revert.
Quick fix options:
Update Edge to the latest version or try Edge Beta (often includes fixes early).
Clear cache and restart Edge.
Use a temporary workaround (press Enter after each line or use Word/Adobe Acrobat for critical edits).
Report the bug via Alt + Shift + I for faster resolution.
Let me know how it goes, Happy to help!
I had the same issue.
Firstly, I disabled Edge automatic upgrade.
Later, I had to downgrade to a 142 version of edge, and then disabled the New PDF Viewer.
It sounds like you're experiencing a known issue with the Microsoft Edge PDF Viewer, particularly related to text rendering and font display when adding text to PDF documents. This problem has been reported in versions of Microsoft Edge where certain fonts, especially Japanese fonts, do not display correctly, leading to issues like the ones you described.
Here are a few suggestions you can try:
edge://flags/#edge-new-pdf-viewer and setting it to disabled.NewPDFReaderEnabled policy to true.If these steps do not resolve the issue, it may be worth checking the Microsoft Edge known issues page for any updates or additional workarounds.
