Creating restricted channels within a team for confidential discussions or projects
Hi @Sneha Uniyal,
Thank you for posting your question to Microsoft Q&A Forum.
I'd love to provide some of my insights about archived private channels.
- Do archived private channels count toward the 30‑channel limit?
Yes, archived private channels still count toward the private channel limit.
Archived Channels still count towards the 1,000 channels per team limit. The rule applies the same way to private channel limits, because Microsoft counts all states of channels (active, archived, and recently deleted) toward their respective limits.
Since archived private channels are still private channels, they must be counted.
- Why is restoring blocked if the total count stays the same?
Even though restoring an archived private channel does not create a new channel, Microsoft still enforces the 30‑private‑channel limit during restore operations.
Because Teams treats all private channels active, archived, or deleted (within 30 days) as counting toward the limit, even when content was gone.
If deleted private channels continue counting until fully purged, archived channels whose content and structure are fully preserved certainly continue to count. If a channel still exists in any restorable state, it counts toward limits.
Microsoft does not distinguish between “active” and “archived” private channels for the purpose of enforcing limit rules.
This is a consistent design behavior since private channels each create a separate SharePoint site, making them heavier resources than standard channels. Thus, Teams enforces the limit strictly to prevent exceeding resource allocations tied to these site collections.
- Is there any workaround besides deleting channels?
Unfortunately, no official restore workaround exists when the limit is reached.
Your best option is permanently deleting private channels you don’t need. Once a private channel is hard‑deleted, it frees up one slot.
Additionally, you have to note that deleted private channels continue to count toward the limit during the 30‑day soft‑delete window. So, you may need to wait up to 30 days unless an admin force‑purges the SharePoint site (not recommended unless you understand implications).
You can also move content to a standard channel, but this is rarely ideal.
Only feasible if private‑channel privacy is no longer needed.
