Teams Files Not Loading

When accessing my team, nobody in my org can see the files for any of the channels. When going to the files tab, it either perpetually loads or just shows nothing- not even the menus accross the top for adding or editing files. Other tabs, such as the posts and chats all load with no issues and are completely useable, just the files tab is completely blank. This is across all channels within one specific team and for all users within that team. Nobody can see the files tab, both in the app and in the web.

The other strange part is that the files still exist and are accessible. If I look for a file by going into word and grabbing it from my recent files, or manually search the file path, the file will open with no issues. People can still collaborate on the files with a link and see them just fine, but you just can't get to them through teams.

    Hi @Carson C,

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A forum and thank you for sharing the details.

I can understand how annoying it feels when the Files tab is just blank while everything else in the team works. The Files tab in each channel is essentially a view of the team’s SharePoint document library. When it fails to load, the issue is usually related to SharePoint configuration or permissions rather than the Teams app itself. Here are some common reasons this might happen:

    • Renamed library: If the team’s Documents library was renamed from the default “Shared Documents,” the Files tab may fail to render.
    • No active owner: If the underlying Microsoft 365 group temporarily has no owner, the Files tab can show errors or fail to load.
    • Large folders: Very large folders (over ~5,000 items in a single view) can cause SharePoint to throttle the view, making the Files tab appear empty or slow.

To help resolve this, here are some steps you can try (or share with your team owner/Microsoft 365 admin if you don't have admin privileges):

1/ Open the team’s SharePoint site and confirm the library loads:

From the affected channel, choose More options (…) > Open in SharePoint (or open the team’s SharePoint site directly).
    User's image

If the site and Documents library open and you see the content there, the issue is likely with Teams rendering.

2/ Verify the document library name:

In SharePoint, check that the library’s internal name is Shared Documents. If it was changed, revert it back (site owner permissions required).

Microsoft guidance notes this as a root cause for Files tab failures: Error: The object specified does not belong to a list.

3/ Confirm there’s at least one active owner on the team’s Microsoft 365 group:

If the group is orphaned (e.g., a previous owner left), assign a new owner in the Microsoft 365 admin center.

This often resolves “problem reaching this app” errors on the Files tab: Error: There was a problem reaching this app.

4/ Check for large folder/view issues:

If a folder holds more than ~5,000 items, create subfolders or indexed views to stay under the threshold.

This avoids SharePoint throttling that can make the Files tab appear empty.

Reference: "The number of items in this list exceeds the list view threshold" when you view lists in Microsoft 365.

5/ Run the built-in admin diagnostics (if you’re an admin):

Microsoft provides a self-diagnostics tool for known issues with Files in Teams. Run it from the admin portal to quickly spot misconfigurations: Run a self-diagnostics tool.

    6/ Submit support ticket:

If you've followed the above steps and the issue still persists, you can submit a Support ticket directly to Microsoft Support.

You can create a support ticket by sign in to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center following steps from this link: Get support - Microsoft 365 admin | Microsoft Learn to raise a support ticket from admin center or calling the phone support to contact Microsoft Support: Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support.

If you don't have admin rights, you can look for the way to find your admin through this link: How do I find my Microsoft 365 admin? - Microsoft Support.

The issue you are experiencing with the Files tab in Microsoft Teams could be related to several factors. Here are some potential causes and resolutions:

    1. Temporary Issue: The problem might be a temporary issue with Teams. In such cases, it is recommended to wait and try accessing the Files tab again after some time.
    2. Self-Diagnostics Tool: If the issue persists, Microsoft 365 admin users can run a self-diagnostics tool to check for known issues with accessing files in Teams. This tool can help identify and resolve underlying problems.
    3. SharePoint Permissions: Since the Files tab in Teams is linked to SharePoint, ensure that the SharePoint site permissions are correctly configured. If the permissions are not set up properly, it can prevent users from accessing files through Teams.
    4. Microsoft 365 Group Ownership: If the Microsoft 365 group associated with the team has no assigned owner (for example, if the owner has left the organization), this can cause issues with accessing the Files tab. Assigning a new owner to the group may resolve the issue.
    5. Network Issues: Sometimes, network connectivity issues can affect the loading of the Files tab. Ensure that there are no network restrictions or issues that might be causing this problem.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, consider reaching out to Microsoft Support for further assistance.
