Creating restricted channels within a team for confidential discussions or projects
Dear @Jay Gosalia,
Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft 365 Q&A forum. I can certainly understand the frustration of trying to organize your team and finding that your private channel isn't appearing in the meeting setup menu. The reason you are only seeing the General channel (and other standard channels) is due to a specific design in Microsoft Teams: Private channels do not support scheduled "Channel Meetings" in the same way standard channels do.
Because private channels have a unique membership list that is separate from the main team, they do not have a shared calendar linked to the "Add channel" field in a meeting invite. This is why they do not appear in the dropdown list when you are scheduling a meeting.
For more details, refer to: IT Admins - Private channels in Microsoft Teams - Microsoft Teams | Microsoft Learn
Since you cannot select the private channel directly in the "Add channel" box, I recommend the following two methods to achieve your goal:
Method 1: Use the "Meet Now" feature
- Go to your Private Channel.
- In the top right corner, click the Meet button (camera icon).
- This starts a meeting immediately within that channel. All members of the private channel will see the meeting notification in their channel feed and can join directly.
Method 2: Schedule a Calendar Meeting and invite the members
- Go to your Teams Calendar and select new meeting.
- Instead of using the "Add channel" field, manually type the names of the members belonging to that private channel into the Add required attendee's box. Tip: If you have a large group, you can type the name of a Tag (if your admin has enabled tags) or a Distribution List to add everyone at once.
- Once the meeting is created, you can copy the meeting link and post it into a new conversation in the Private Channel so members can find it easily.
As a member of the Microsoft 365 Community Support team, I am here to help you navigate these design nuances. While I can provide these workarounds to ensure your team stays connected, I want to be honest and clarify that as a community moderator, I cannot change the underlying architecture of Teams to allow private channels to appear in the "Add channel" menu.
Please let me know if you have any further questions or if the problem persists after trying these solutions. Thank you for your patience and cooperation.
