Restoring deleted dashboards in Azure Managed Grafana

We have a folder in our Azure Managed Grafana instance called "WIP", which contains work-in-progress dashboards developed by any of our users. As a result, there is no access control on this - any user can edit any dashboard. Earlier today, a Grafana user accidentally deleted the whole WIP directory, including all the dashboards created by other users. We don't have any back-ups. Is there any way Azure support can restore these? (I understand there might be internal logs that capture this.) We're going to put in place regular backups of Grafana dashboards outside the managed service going forward.

Hello Matt Williams, We understand that your entire folder in Azure Managed Grafana, which removed multiple dashboards created by other users, and you do not have external backups. You want to know whether that dashboards can restore the deleted folder/dashboards.

As per Grafana documentation, when you delete dashboards, they’re stored in the deletion history for up to 12 months, allowing you to restore them if needed.

The Grafana introduced a “Recently deleted” recovery workflow where deleted dashboards are retained for a period and can be restored but the published availability is “Cloud only” and it also states “Folders themselves cannot be restored.” Implication for your case: even if your Azure Managed Grafana instance exposes this capability, you would restore dashboards into a new folder (since the WIP folder itself won’t come back).

Note: Restore dashboards is an admin-only feature. From the Dashboards page, click Recently deleted to see everything that’s been removed in the last 12 months. User's image

As there's no direct option to restore the dashboard from the Azure Portal.

From the Azure perspective, the only option we have is to contacted the Azure engineering team of Managed Grafana and if they can share some JSON schema with end user for restoration or if they can restore the same for us.

Hope this helps! If you have further questions or need more assistance, feel free to ask! Thanks
