OneNote Notebooks: no longer appears | OneNote docs on OneDrive no longer accessible

I work off of a Mac.

My OneNote on my desktop is linked/backed up on OneDrive.

On my OneNote on my desktop, my library no longer appears.

In OneNote, I choose File > Open Notebook and I should be able to choose and Open the OneNote docs ... the folder doesn't appear. I go on Onedrive to access my OneNote docs and i get an error message ... Sorry, something went wrong. Item doesn't exist. I didn't delete anything from OneDrive! Your technician emailed me and said: 'this is an identified concern as we have received similar such cases. This is occurring due to a glitch'. I've been asked to share my challenges with the OneNote team and they have yet to reply. To add insult to injury, the contact history indicates my tickets were resolved (#7098251228 and #7098248896), which is NOT the case. Please advise.

I have OneNote notebooks in my personal OneDrive that became inaccessible.  For a few days I was able to access a few folders via my Mac and my iPhone but now, the whole folder is inaccessible.  During this time, I proactively saved what I could but, I still cannot retrieve the balance of my data.

When accessing the folder on OneDrive, I get a SharePoint Foundation error:

[Troubleshoot issues with Microsoft SharePoint Foundation.]

It’s been confirmed this is a known issue.  My ticket numbers are 7098251228 and 7098248896.

    Please:

    Check SharePoint backend for resid=84cdcad7-b779-20ec-8099-f00800000000

Perform point-in-time restore from before 2/28/2026

Follow these steps to troubleshoot and try to regain access to the missing OneNote notebooks and content on Mac and OneDrive:

    1. Confirm whether the notebook still exists online
    • In a browser, sign in directly to OneDrive from the OneDrive home page.
    • Browse typical locations such as Documents, Notebooks, or any folder where the notebooks were stored.
    • If the notebook is stored on SharePoint instead of personal OneDrive, contact the SharePoint or IT administrator to verify whether the notebook or its library was moved, deleted, or the site is offline.
    1. Check if the issue is server‑side vs. OneNote for Mac
    • In OneNote for Mac, copy the notebook link:
      1. On the toolbar, select Notebooks > Notebooks > Copy Link to Notebook.
      2. Paste the URL into a browser and press Enter to open it in OneNote for the web.
    • Outcomes:
      • If the notebook opens and content appears in OneNote for the web, the problem is likely with OneNote for Mac. Proceed to step 3.
      • If the notebook does not open and OneNote for the web reports that the item doesn’t exist, the problem is with the OneDrive/SharePoint location (deleted, moved, or currently unavailable). Proceed to step 4.
    1. Reset the connection in OneNote for Mac If the notebook opens correctly in OneNote for the web but not on the Mac client:
    2. In OneNote for Mac, on the menu bar, select Notebooks > Notebooks > Close This Notebook for the affected notebook.
    3. In the browser (OneNote for the web), with the same notebook open, select Open in OneNote on the ribbon to re-open it in OneNote for Mac.
    4. Allow time for a full sync, especially if the notebook is large or the connection is slow.
    5. If needed, manually sync:
      • Click File > Sync This Notebook to sync just that notebook, or
      • Click File > Sync All Notebooks.
    6. If any sync error icons appear next to notebooks, hover over them to see error codes and messages, then resolve based on the specific error.
    7. If OneNote reports the notebook or item doesn’t exist If OneDrive/SharePoint reports that the item doesn’t exist, or OneNote for the web cannot open the notebook:
    8. Verify the notebook location:
      • In OneNote for Mac, go to File > Info (or equivalent notebook info view) and confirm the stored location (OneDrive vs. SharePoint, and which account).
    9. If stored on OneDrive:
      • Go to the OneDrive home page, sign in with the same account, and check whether the notebook folder still exists.
      • If it was deleted or corrupted due to the identified glitch, use OneDrive restore options if available (for OneDrive for Business, see “Restore your OneDrive” in the referenced article) to roll back to a previous state where the notebook still existed.
    10. If stored on SharePoint Online:
      • Use the same restore approach as for OneDrive (SharePoint Online uses the same Files Restore mechanism for document libraries).
      • If the notebook or library was deleted more than the standard recycle-bin period ago, SharePoint Online keeps backups for 14 additional days. An administrator can contact Microsoft Support to request a restoration within that 14‑day window.
    11. Check for deleted notes/sections (if the notebook opens but content is missing) If the notebook opens but pages/sections are missing rather than the whole notebook:
    12. On Mac, open the shared notebook where the notes are expected.
    13. On the menu bar, select Notebooks > Deleted Notes > View Deleted Notes.
    14. If the missing pages appear there:
      • Control‑click the page > Restore to.
      • Choose the target section (and notebook if needed) and select Restore.
      • Repeat for all missing pages.
    15. If the notebook is local and not yet in the cloud If any notebooks were local (not yet moved to OneDrive/SharePoint) and are simply not appearing:
    16. Ensure the OneNote Notebooks folder is in the default Documents or My Documents folder on the Mac’s local drive.
    17. If it was moved to an external drive or network share, move it back into Documents or My Documents, then reopen from OneNote.
    18. For long‑term protection, move local notebooks to OneDrive or SharePoint so they are backed up and accessible across devices.
    19. Escalation and support Because the behavior has been acknowledged as a glitch and prior tickets were marked resolved incorrectly, the next steps are:
    • Confirm whether the notebook or its library can be restored using OneDrive/SharePoint restore as described above.
    • If restore is not possible or the notebook is part of a SharePoint Online site, request that a tenant administrator open a new support case and, if needed, ask Microsoft Support for a point‑in‑time restore of the affected OneDrive or SharePoint library within the 14‑day backup window.
