OneNote Web Clipper is a browser extension that depends on the browser’s extension framework and the OneNote service. When it starts crashing across multiple browsers (Chrome and Safari on macOS), the most likely causes are:
- A problem with the current Web Clipper extension build in that browser.
- A browser update that changed how extensions run.
- Corrupted extension data or a sign-in/permissions issue.
To restore Web Clipper functionality, try the following in Chrome on macOS:
- Remove and reinstall the OneNote Web Clipper extension
- In Chrome, go to the extensions page.
- Remove OneNote Web Clipper.
- Reinstall it from the Chrome Web Store using the official link: Google Chrome.
- Reconfigure and sign in again
- After reinstalling, click the OneNote Web Clipper icon in Chrome.
- In the purple popup window, sign in with the desired Microsoft account.
- If prompted, confirm the requested application permissions. These can later be changed in Account settings.
- Repeat similar steps in Safari
- Remove the existing OneNote Web Clipper extension.
- Reinstall the latest version from the Safari extensions gallery (via the Mac App Store, if applicable).
- Open any website, click the OneNote Web Clipper icon, and sign in again.
If crashes continue after a clean reinstall in both browsers, this indicates a compatibility or service issue that must be addressed by the product team. In that case, collect basic details (macOS version, browser versions, whether the crash happens immediately or after sign-in) and contact Microsoft support via the standard support channels for OneNote and Microsoft 365 so the issue can be escalated.
As a temporary workaround for capturing content into OneNote while Web Clipper is unstable, use the built-in screen clipping shortcut and then paste into OneNote:
- Press ⌘ + SHIFT + S to create a screen clip (this adds the clip to the clipboard).
- Paste the captured image into any OneNote page.
