A user is missing parts of their chat conversation with other people and in groups while using the Windows app of Teams.

However using the mobile and web based version have all chat conversation.

I have tried reinstalling and clearing the cache but the issue keeps coming back.

Is there any suggestion to fix this?

User is on windows 11 using new Teams

    Hi @Stanley,

Thank you for posting your question on the Microsoft Q&A forum.

I understand how frustrating it can be when parts of a user's chat are missing in the Teams desktop app. To better understand the situation, could you clarify the following:

    • Are there specific chats or channels that are always missing messages, or is it random?
    • Does the issue persist across all devices or only the Windows desktop client?

In the meantime, below are several steps that may help improve the issue:

    1. Ensure Teams desktop is fully updated

Open Teams > Click your profile picture > Check for updates.

Make sure you are running the latest stable version.

    1. Check for conflicts with multiple accounts

Teams may retain credentials from old accounts.

    • In Teams > Profile > Sign out all account if you have
    • Make sure you clear the Teams cache properly by following the official Microsoft guidance: Clear the Teams client cache
    • Clear Cached Credentials and Identity Data:
      • Ensure all Office applications are closed.
      • Open File Explorer and navigate to the following folders (one at a time):

    %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneAuth %localappdata%\Microsoft\IdentityCache

    • Delete all contents inside these folders.
      • Re-sign in with only the affected account and check if chats sync correctly.
    1. Repair the Teams App
    • Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
    • Locate Teams > click Advanced options or Modify.
    • Select Repair and follow the on-screen instructions.
    • If the issue persists, repeat the process and choose Reset or Uninstall/Reinstall
    • User's image
    1. Test on a new Windows user profile

Sometimes user-specific Windows settings cause sync issues.

Create a new Windows account > install Teams > log in > check if chats show up.

    Hi Stanley.

I have faced the same issue before, and these are the workarounds my IT admin suggested before a manual check on his end:

    1. Sync issues: Sometimes Teams doesn’t fully sync across devices. Signing out and back in (other than clearing Teams cache which you already did) can restore missing chats.
    2. Reinstalling with cache cleanup: If reinstalling alone didn't help, uninstalling Teams, clearing the cache folders (Cache, blob_storage, databases, GPUCache, IndexedDB, Local Storage, tmp) manually and reinstalling may do it. If you have not already tried this, I recommend trying this as I watched my IT admin do this on my system through remote troubleshooting.
    3. Connectivity: Poor network connection can cause partial loading of chat history. Ensuring stable internet helps.
    4. Updates: Outdated Teams versions sometimes fail to display full history. Updating Teams to the latest build is recommended.

There are also compliance or retention policies which can cause older chats to be deleted or intentionally hidden - this can be quickly checked by the IT admin. If chats are still missing, contacting your IT admin should help — they can check if messages were removed due to policy or if there’s a tenant-wide issue.

    Hope this helps!
