I created a private channel to help coworkers out. I am the owner of said channel with several other owners. I then left the channel, but no one has access to it now we need access as it has all of our files. How can we fix this?

Dear @steph L, Welcome to Q&A forum. I understand that you created a private channel, were an owner, and then left the channel. After that, no one is able to access the channel or its files and you are seeing an “Access denied” message.

I’d like to reassure you that the files have not been deleted. It could be the private channel no longer has an active owner. Private channels in Microsoft Teams are managed separately from the main team, and if all owners leave or are removed, access to the channel and its files becomes locked by design.

To restore access, a Microsoft Teams administrator or Global administrator will need to reassign an owner to the private channel or repair its membership using admin tools.

Step-by-step to add owner from Teams admin Center:

    • Sign in to the Microsoft Teams admin center
    • Go to Teams > Manage teams > Search for and select the team that contains the private channel
    • Open the Channels tab > Select the private channel and choose Edit
    • Add a user and set their role as Owner > Save the changes

Once an owner is restored: The owner can access the private channel, files stored in the private channel’s SharePoint site become accessible again, the owner can add other members as needed

Please understand that our initial response does not always resolve the issue immediately. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution.

I truly appreciate your patience and understanding. If you have any further questions or need further clarification, please feel free to reach out. I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

    Thank you for your cooperation.

In a Teams private channel, only channel owners or members can access the channel and its files. Team owners who aren’t members of the private channel can see that the channel exists under Manage team, but they can’t see its content. Guests can’t create private channels, and only private channel owners can directly add or remove people.

In this situation, the original private channel owner left the channel and now no one can access it. The context does not describe a supported way for end users or team owners (who are not private channel members) to reassign ownership or regain access once all private channel owners/members are effectively removed. The private channel’s SharePoint site permissions are kept in sync with the private channel membership and can’t be managed independently through SharePoint.

Because of this, recovery requires admin intervention:

    1. Contact the Microsoft 365/Teams administrator for the organization.
    2. Ask the admin to investigate the private channel in the Teams admin tools and/or Microsoft 365 admin center and restore or repair its membership/ownership so at least one valid owner is added back to the private channel.
    3. Once an owner is re-established, that owner can add the rest of the coworkers back to the private channel so they can access the files again.

If the private channel itself was deleted, it can be restored within 30 days by a private channel owner or team owner; restoring the private channel will also restore its associated SharePoint site and files.
