I would like to seek help in fixing the Microsoft Essentials Teams account of our end user. We cannot log in to his account because we don’t have access anymore on the authenticator app, and the only way to sign in is through this verification method.

Please help to fix this issue.

    Hello @Christine Rose Ferrer,

Thank you for reaching out and explaining the issue with accessing the Microsoft Teams account.

To guide you correctly, I’d like to first confirm whether you are the IT administrator for your company or organization’s tenant.

If you do have IT admin permissions, you can resolve this issue by resetting the Multi‑Factor Authentication (MFA) configuration for the affected user. This can be done by following these steps:

    User's image

This will revoke the current MFA configuration and allow the user to set up the Microsoft Authenticator app again.

If you are not the IT administrator, I recommend contacting your organization’s IT admin team and asking them to perform the MFA reset on your behalf, as end users do not have permission to modify MFA settings for work or organizational accounts.

You can share this official Microsoft article with them for guidance: Manage authentication methods for Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication - Microsoft Entra ID |…

Please let me know whether you are an IT admin or an end user, and I’ll be happy to guide you further based on your role.

    Kind regards,

For a Microsoft Teams for business account where sign-in is blocked because the only verification method is the Microsoft Authenticator app that is no longer accessible, the resolution depends on whether there is an administrator available and how many admins exist in the tenant.

    1. If the user is a normal end user (not an admin)
    • Contact the organization’s Microsoft 365 / Microsoft Entra administrator.
    • The admin can reset the user’s MFA settings so new methods (including a re-registered Authenticator app or phone) can be configured at next sign-in. This is done in the Microsoft Entra admin center under the user’s Authentication methods by using “Require re-register multifactor authentication” (per the referenced guidance in the MFA reset article).
    1. If the affected account is the only global admin in the tenant
    • This is a tenant lockout scenario. In this case, the Microsoft Data Protection team must be involved to restore access.
    • Call Microsoft Support using the regional customer service phone number listed in “Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support” and ask the frontline agent to open a ticket with the Data Protection team for a global admin locked out due to MFA.
    • Be prepared to confirm:
      • It is an Office 365/Microsoft 365 for business tenant.
      • The locked account is a company (work) account, not education or personal.
      • The locked account is the only global admin.
      • You need a service request to regain access and reset MFA.
    • If the subscription was purchased through a partner/reseller and the global admin cannot open a ticket, contact the reseller and ask them to open a Microsoft support request on your behalf.
    1. If there are other global admins in the tenant
    • Any other global admin can:
      • Sign in to the Microsoft Entra admin center.
      • Go to Users → All users → select the locked user.
      • Open Authentication methods and choose to require re-registration of MFA.
    • After this, the end user signs in again and will be prompted to set up new MFA methods (new Authenticator app, phone, etc.).
    1. If repeated failed attempts are causing additional sign-in blocks
    • Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication can temporarily block sign-in after many failed attempts.
    • If this is contributing to the issue, wait before trying again or use a different MFA method (if any exists). If malicious activity is suspected, an admin should review Microsoft Entra sign-in logs.

Because Teams uses modern authentication tied to Microsoft 365/Entra ID, the root fix is always to reset or recover the MFA configuration on the underlying account via an admin or, if no admin is available, via Microsoft Support/Data Protection.
