Created a Private channel but I cannot see it

I created a new Team with two channels. The first channel is a shared General channel. The second channel is Private, and I added two members at the time I created it. I recall when I created it, I tried to add myself to the member list, but it did not recognize my user, and I assumed it was because I was the Owner and didn't need to add myself as member. As soon as I created the channel, I could not see it under the team. The members can see the channel. When I go to the Manage Team page, I can see the two channels. When I click on the private channel > 3 dots > Show channel owners, it shows 'Owners for channel' as a blank list. My admin at my company got involved and took me off as owner of the team and added me back, and made me a member of the channel. But I still cannot see the channel. However, I can access the files on Sharepoint that are associated with the new private channel.

    Hi @Heidi Brown,

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A forum.

I would like to provide you with the following information:

I understand that you have just created one team and two channels, including one private channel.

Normally, when you create a private channel, you do not need to add yourself as a member, as you will automatically be the owner of that channel.

In this case, please help me check the following:

First, please try signing out and signing back in

    1. Make sure you are signed in with the correct account that was used to create the channel.
    2. Check whether Channel only mode is currently enabled. User's image
    3. Ask your IT department to help verify permissions (tenant admin access required)
    • Step 1: Go to https://admin.teams.microsoft.com
    • Step 2: Select Teams > Manage teams > choose your team > select the channel User's image
    • Step 3: Under Members, make sure your role is shown as Owner User's image

If your account does not appear here, please ask your IT department to add you as an owner of the channel.

    User's image

    1. Check whether the channel is hidden
    • Step 1: In Teams and channels, locate your team
    • Step 2: Click See all channels
    • Step 3: Make sure the channel is set to Show User's image
    1. Clear the Microsoft Teams cache (on Windows)
    • Step 1: Completely close Microsoft Teams
    • Step 2: Press Windows + R, then enter the following path and press Enter: %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Packages\MSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Microsoft\MSTeams
    • Step 3: Delete all files and folders in this directory
    • Step 4: Restart Microsoft Teams

If the channel still does not appear after completing all the steps above, I recommend that you contact Microsoft technical support for further investigation.

    Note

The steps below require a tenant administrator account. You may ask your IT department to assist:

    • Step 1: Go to https://admin.microsoft.com
    • Step 2: Select Help & support User's image
    • Step 3: Enter the subject: Channel in Teams not showing User's image
    • Step 4: Click Contact support
    • Step 5: Choose your preferred contact method User's image

After the system receives the ticket and assigns it to an agent, a Microsoft support engineer will proactively contact you to help investigate this issue in more detail.

I hope this information is helpful. Please follow these steps and let me know if it works for you. If not, we can work together to resolve this.

Thank you for your patience and your understanding. If you have any questions or need further assistance, please feel free to share them in the comments on this post so I can continue to support you.

I look forward to continuing the conversation.

In this scenario the private channel exists and its members can see it, but the creator/owner cannot see it in the channel list and the “Owners for channel” list is blank. This indicates a membership/ownership inconsistency for the private channel rather than a general Teams client issue.

Key facts from the product behavior:

    • Only users who are owners or members of a private channel can see and participate in it.
    • The person who creates a private channel is initially the private channel owner and is the only one who can directly add or remove people from it.
    • Team owners who are not members of a private channel can see the channel only under Manage team, but not in their channels list.

    Given that:

    1. The channel appears under Manage team but not in the channel list for the affected user.
    2. “Owners for channel” shows an empty list.
    3. Other members can see and use the channel.

The private channel’s membership/ownership record is effectively orphaned for that user. This cannot be corrected by normal add/remove operations alone and typically requires admin intervention at the tenant level.

Recommended resolution path for the admin:

    1. Verify private channel settings and membership
      • In Teams, go to the team → More optionsManage teamChannels.
      • Confirm the private channel is listed and note its current members and owners (if any are shown).
    2. Re-establish a valid owner for the private channel
      • If any member is visible as an owner, have that owner:
        • Go to the private channel → More optionsManage channelMembers tab.
        • Explicitly add the affected user as a member, then promote to owner.
      • If no owner is visible (blank owners list), the admin should:
        • Temporarily add another user as a member/owner via Manage channel (if possible), or
        • If the UI does not allow this, proceed to step 4 (recreate the channel).
    3. Confirm visibility behavior
      • Once the affected user is explicitly listed as a member (and optionally owner) in Manage channelMembers, the private channel should appear in that user’s channel list.
      • If it still does not appear, sign out of Teams on all devices and sign back in, then check again.
    4. If the channel remains broken, recreate it
      • Because private channels cannot be converted or moved and are tightly linked to the parent team, a corrupted ownership state may not be recoverable through the client UI.
      • Create a new private channel in the same team and add the correct members and owners.
      • Move or copy any necessary files from the existing private channel’s SharePoint site to the new private channel’s SharePoint site (keeping in mind that files for private channels are stored in a separate SharePoint site from the rest of the team’s files).
      • Once confirmed working, delete the problematic private channel (it can be restored within 30 days if needed).

If the admin cannot assign an owner or member at all via the Teams UI, this becomes a tenant-level support issue and should be escalated to Microsoft 365 support so they can repair the private channel’s membership/ownership in the service.
