Transcript or extract from a Teams Chat (Non-Meeting Transcript)

According to your concern, in current Microsoft Teams for work/school, there isn't a simple “Download/Export chat as a transcript” button in the Teams client for a standard 1:1 or group chat message.

If you want to export message data (chat and channel messages) at scale, you must contact your organization administrator and ask for their help. Teams chat content is store as compliance records in Exchange Online and only your IT administrator (specifically M365 Compliance team) can help you search and export those chats using Purview eDiscovery and Teams Export APIs.

Teams does not provide a built-in “export transcript” feature for regular 1:1 or group chats in the client UI similar to meeting transcripts.

To extract chat content at scale or in a more structured way than manual copy/paste, organizational admins and developers can use the Microsoft Teams Export APIs. These APIs allow exporting 1:1, group chat, meeting chats, and channel messages programmatically, including scenarios such as:

• Exporting all Teams messages for a given user or team over a date range.
• Running daily exports of all user or team messages created or updated in a given date range.

For example, the Export APIs can be used to:

• Retrieve chat messages (1:1 or group) as data objects instead of manually copying from the client.
• Export links to meeting recordings and transcripts for a given organizer, and then download those assets.

Using these APIs requires appropriate permissions and is typically done by an admin or service application, not end users. For ad-hoc, end-user scenarios, manual copy/paste into Word or another editor remains the only option exposed in the Teams client.
