Trying to find my laptop using Microsoft

Yes, if certain conditions were met on the stolen laptop, it may be possible to locate or remotely lock it using the Microsoft account.

To use Microsoft’s “Find my device” feature, all of the following must be true for that laptop:

• It was running Windows 10 or Windows 11.
• A Microsoft account was used to sign in, and that account is an administrator on the device.
• Find my device was turned on before it was stolen.
• Location services were enabled and the device can connect to the internet and has enough battery.

If those conditions are met, do this from another device:

1. Go to https://account.microsoft.com/devices and sign in with the same Microsoft account used on the stolen laptop.
2. Select the Find My Device tab.
3. Choose the stolen laptop and select Find to see its location on a map.
4. If the device appears and you want to protect the data, select Lock → Next to remotely lock it. After locking, the account password can be reset for added security.

Notes:

• This works only for personal Microsoft accounts, not work or school accounts.
• It works for Windows devices (PC, laptop, Surface, etc.), not for iOS, Android, or Xbox.
• If the device never had Find my device enabled or cannot get online, it will not report its current location.

If the device is managed by an organization with Microsoft Intune, IT administrators can also use the Locate device remote action from the Intune admin center to view the device’s location on a map and optionally use additional lost-device actions, depending on configuration.
