I can't use the Teams program I have - I have an error that the Classic version is outdated. How do I get the updated version?

    Dear @MP Dixon,

Classic Teams is at (or past) its end-of-availability window, so Microsoft is progressively blocking older Classic Teams builds and pushing users to the new Teams client instead. End of availability for classic Teams client - Microsoft Teams | Microsoft Learn

If you can no longer update Classic Teams (“Classic version is outdated / no longer available”), then you have to move to new Teams (not keep patching Classic). Here are some steps for you to try:

    1. Remove Classic Teams, then install/open new Teams (your org may provide a company portal / software center). Download Teams Desktop and Mobile Apps | Microsoft Teams [d444-8b43-740-c5c9]
    2. If you cannot install new Teams by yourself due to your organization's policy, please contact your IT Admin to support you. New Teams may be deployed through your organization’s Microsoft 365 Apps / software deployment process. How do I find my Microsoft 365 admin? - Microsoft Support
    3. While you are waiting for Teams upgrade, you can use the new Teams web app on a supported browser as a workaround.

I hope the information shared helps point you in the right direction. Please try the steps above and let me know if they work. If not, we can continue working together to narrow this down.

The first response may not always resolve the issue right away, but with your help and more details, we can work toward a solution.

Classic Teams is no longer supported and must be replaced with the new Teams client or used via the web.

    Use these options:

    1. Install or switch to the new Teams desktop app
    • If the classic client shows an end-of-availability message, follow the prompt to install or open the new Teams app.
    • If installation is blocked by organization policy (GPO) or OS version, contact the IT admin to allow installation or update the operating system as required.
    • If the device cannot run the new client at all (for example, unsupported OS), use the web app instead (see next step).
    1. Use Teams on the web
    • When classic Teams is blocked, the client shows an option to “continue to Teams on the web.”
    • Open that option and sign in to continue using Teams in a supported browser.
    1. Keep the new Teams client updated
    • Teams desktop updates automatically when idle.
    • To trigger an update manually, select the profile picture in the top-right corner and choose Check for updates (or Update > Update and restart Teams when prompted).
    • If Teams was installed into a non-default folder (such as Program Files via a script), reinstall it into the default user\\AppData location so auto-updates work correctly.
    1. Verify the version and update status
    • In the new Teams client, go to Settings and more > Settings > About Teams.
    • Under Version, check if an Update now option appears and use it if available.

If the device or organization policies prevent installing the new client and updating the OS, Teams must be used via the web app.

What device are you using Teams on? Is it Windows, Mac computer or a mobile device?

What is the OS version of this device?
