Microsoft Edge doesn't auto-prompt to save passwords. Now my "add password" option is greyed out. What other workarounds are available?

In current versions of Microsoft Edge, passwords can no longer be added purely from the settings page; they must be created or entered on a website, and Edge will then offer to save them. The greyed‑out Add button is expected behavior when manual add is not available.

To work around this and get passwords into Microsoft Password Manager, use these supported flows:

    1. Turn on prompts to save passwords
Make sure Edge is allowed to offer saving:
      1. Select Settings and more (⋯) > Settings.
      2. Go to Profiles > Passwords (or Passwords and autofill > Microsoft Password Manager).
      3. Turn on Ask to save passwords and passkeys / Offer to save passwords.
    2. Let Edge capture passwords as you sign in
When signing in or creating an account on a site:
      • Enter the username and password on the site and submit.
      • Edge will show a prompt asking to save the password.
      • Choose Got it (or equivalent) to save it.
      • If the prompt is dismissed with X, Edge will ask again next time; if Never is chosen, Edge will stop offering saves for that site until the “never save” choice is cleared.
    3. Use autofill and basic info for account creation
For new accounts, Edge can help fill forms so that the password prompt appears at the end:
      1. Go to Settings and more > Settings > Profiles > Personal info.
      2. Ensure Save and fill basic info is on.
      3. Turn on Automatically fill my info on sign up forms.
After the form is filled and submitted with a new password, Edge will again offer to save it.
    4. Import passwords from another manager or browser
If passwords are stored in another browser or password manager, import them into Edge instead of adding them one‑by‑one:
      1. In Edge, go to Settings and more > Settings > Profiles > Passwords.
      2. Use the import option (when available) to bring in passwords exported from the other manager.
    5. Confirm autofill and sync behavior
      • Edge only saves passwords with explicit consent; it will not silently store them.
      • If signed in and syncing, saved passwords are available on all devices using the same profile.
      • To stop prompts entirely, turn off Ask to save passwords; to stop autofill, turn off Autofill passwords and passkeys and/or clear saved passwords via Privacy, search, and services > Clear browsing data.

If Edge still never prompts on any site even with Ask to save passwords enabled, use the “Never” list (if exposed in your build) to remove sites that were previously set to never save, then sign in again so Edge can offer to save the credentials.

    Hi!

You need to enable the Ask to save passwords and passkeys option in the image. This will make the Add button available to manually add a password, and Edge will also ask if you want to save the password when you enter it on a website.
