Teams won't let me right-click paste a screenshot, but will allow Control+V to work

Impacted users report that they are unable to copy and paste URLs, text, and images in Microsoft Teams desktop client chats, as the paste option appears greyed out when using the right-click dropdown menu method.

To bypass impact, we recommended that users attempt to copy and paste the intended URLs, text, and images using Ctrl + V in the desktop client or by using the right-click dropdown menu method in the Teams web client, if users have access to this connection method.

Scope of impact

Any user attempting to use the copy and paste function in Microsoft Teams desktop client chats may be impacted by this event. This section may be updated as our investigation progresses.

Root cause

A recent update to the Microsoft Edge browser which Microsoft Teams leverages, contains a code regression resulting in impact.

Teams supports both keyboard and mouse-based copy/paste, but behavior can differ after updates or due to how the client handles formatting.

From the documented behavior for Teams messages on desktop:

• Text can always be copied/pasted using standard keyboard shortcuts:
  • Windows: Ctrl+C (copy), Ctrl+V (paste)
  • Mac: Command+C, Command+V
• Right-click context menus are an additional UI layer over the same clipboard operations and can be affected by UI changes, focus issues, or specific builds, while keyboard shortcuts continue to work.

Given that:

• Multiple users in the same environment see right‑click paste fail but Ctrl+V works.
• Another user in the same org does not see the issue.

This strongly suggests a client-side/UI regression or variation (for example, different Teams client versions, different preview/“new Teams” enrollment, or different OS/browser if using Teams on the web), not a fundamental clipboard problem, because:

• Clipboard access itself is working (Ctrl+V succeeds).
• Teams copy/paste is explicitly designed to rely on standard keyboard shortcuts.

Practical guidance based on the documented model:

1. Use keyboard shortcuts as the supported, reliable method for paste in Teams chats and channels:
   • Windows: Ctrl+V
   • Mac: Command+V
2. If right‑click paste is required for usability, compare affected vs unaffected users for:
   • Teams client type (classic vs new) and version.
   • Whether they are using the desktop app vs Teams in a browser.
3. If the issue is limited to specific client builds, treat it as a product bug/regression and escalate via:
   • In Teams: Help → Give feedback to send details (client version, OS, repro steps).
   • Internal support channels if available, so it can be tracked as a known issue.

There is no documented setting to disable paste or change paste behavior in Teams; copy/paste is expected to work via the standard keyboard commands, and right‑click behavior is secondary to that.

Exactly the same behaviour is experienced in Teams Personal (aka. Teams Free), but not in Teams for Web application.

Ctrl + V works for all situations.
