Hi @DanMgr,
Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A forum.
If you would like to have a sandbox environment without changing your current Office/Microsoft 365 E3 plan, the approach recommended by Microsoft is to use the Microsoft 365 Developer Program to create a Microsoft 365 E5 Developer Sandbox that is fully separate and independent from your current production tenant.
- Join the Microsoft 365 Developer Program – E5 Developer Sandbox
- Eligible members can create a Microsoft 365 E5 Developer subscription dedicated to development and testing purposes, fully independent of the production environment.
- The sandbox includes 25 user licenses, is valid for up to 90 days, and can be automatically renewed if there is qualifying development activity.
- There are two sandbox options:
- Instant sandbox: Created very quickly, with preconfigured applications and sample data.
- Configurable sandbox: Allows customization of the tenant and domain name; provisioning may take up to approximately 2 days.
- This subscription is for development purposes only. It may be revoked if misused and does not support commercial transactions (such as purchasing paid services) within the sandbox.

- Create a Microsoft 365 E3 Trial Tenant
Alternatively, you can create a Microsoft 365 E3 trial tenant by clicking “Try for free” and completing the same registration steps as when creating your current tenant.

After successfully creating the tenant, please follow the steps below to turn off automatic renewal:
- Step 1: Go to admin.microsoft.com
- Step 2: Select Billing > Your products, then choose the subscription
- Step 3: Under Recurring billing, switch the status to Off to stop automatic renewal
- The trial period is 30 days.
Important notes
- Unlike the Microsoft 365 Developer Program – E5 Developer Sandbox, the E3 trial subscription will be charged once the 30-day trial period ends if not canceled.
- If you need a long-term testing environment without incurring any costs, Microsoft recommends using the E5 Developer Sandbox.
