mouse buttons periodically don't work

Periodically my mouse buttons will not work. The mouse is fine - I have tried many mice. I can get the buttons to work by starting Task Manager but in a while they will stop working again. It appears to me to be a problem with the system software.

2026-04-21T00:35:40.4933333+00:00 As stated the mice I have tried are good. I have tried USB mice and Bluetooth mice. The cursor is still controlled by the mouse even when the buttons do not work. On one occasion only Chrome is running when the mouse buttons quit working. I have the latest software update installed.

If you have, try disabling it in the Startup tab of Task Manager and restarting the machine.

2026-04-21T18:35:36.6833333+00:00 Thank you for your response. However, I do not know how to determine if any particular piece of software is causing the problem. This is a new computer and I have minimal 3d party software installed - only Adobe and McAfee.

Please try booting to Safe Mode and see if the problem is seen there as well.
Press Windows + I
Go to System → Recovery
Under Advanced startup, click Restart now
Select Troubleshoot
Select Advanced options
Select Startup Settings
Click Restart
Press:
4 = Safe Mode
5 = Safe Mode with Networking.
Please let me know the results.

2026-04-21T01:55:15.8333333+00:00 Thank you. However, the problem is intermittent. I will try Safe Mode but I will not be able to know for sure that change prevents the problem. If the problem doesn't come back for a few days I will let you know and we can continue.
