I am having an issue trying to install Security update KB5083769, It has tried to auto install 5 times now, each time it says updates failed, install error, and I'm not sure what to do about it. I have temporarily paused updates, as each attempt makes my pc very very slow, but I would like to stay up to date on security updates, what can be done?

Hi. I'm David, and I'm happy to help you.

To better understand the problem, please clarify the following:

Are you getting an error code? If yes, which one?

If you don't get an error code, see the update history.

    • Press "Windows + I" and select "Windows Update > Update history".

If you prefer, share a screenshot. Use the shortcut "Windows + Shift + S" to use the screenshot tool.

Also. What is the current "OS Build" of your Windows 11?

    • Press "Windows + R", type winver, and click OK.

If you prefer, share a screenshot.

Be sure to censor your email address if it appears. The Microsoft Q&A is public.

    Looking forward to your reply.

For repeated Windows Update installation failures of a specific security update on Windows 11, use a structured approach and then, if needed, repair the component store that Windows Update relies on.

    1. Retry the update normally
    • Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
    • Select Check for updates and let Windows try again.
    • If it fails once more and performance degrades during the attempt, proceed to the repair step below.
    1. Repair Windows Update components with DISM This mitigates many update install errors by cleaning up the component store used by Windows Update.
    2. Select Start, type cmd.
    3. Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
    4. If prompted by User Account Control, choose Yes.
    5. In the elevated Command Prompt, run:
         dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup

    6. Wait for the command to complete (this can take a while and CPU usage may be high while it runs).
    7. Restart the PC.
    8. Go back to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates to try installing KB5083769 again.
    9. If the update still fails If the same update continues to fail after the DISM cleanup and reboot, follow the general guidance for Windows upgrade/installation errors to continue troubleshooting (for example, checking for additional error codes, running further repair tools, or using in-place repair options) as described in the Windows update error help article.

This approach allows staying current on security updates while addressing the underlying component corruption that commonly causes repeated install failures and system slowdowns during update attempts.
