    Hi BSokolow,

I understand how confusing this can be, especially when you still have plenty of free space but System Restore keeps failing. Have you already tried the Q&A Assist suggestions? In addition, please try the following:

    1, Reset System Restore storage

    1. Press Windows + R, type sysdm.cpl
    2. Go to “System Protection”
    3. Select your system drive (usually “C:”) > click “Configure”
    4. Click “Disable system protection” > Apply (Note: This will delete all existing restore points)
    5. Turn it back on by selecting “Turn on system protection”

    2, Increase the allocated space

    1. In the same “Configure” window
    2. Under “Disk Space Usage”, move the Max Usage slider to a higher value
    3. Click Apply > OK

This ensures Windows has enough reserved space to create new restore points.

3, Try creating a restore point again

After resetting and increasing the quota, test creating a new restore point.

Error 0x80070070 indicates that System Restore cannot create or use restore points because Windows detects insufficient free space on the drive that System Restore uses, even if the drive appears to have plenty of space available.

On Windows 7 and later, System Restore automatically limits how much disk space it can use for restore points based on total disk size and Windows version. For disks larger than 64 GB, it uses up to 5% of total disk space or a maximum of 10 GB, whichever is less. When that quota is full, older restore points are purged to make room for new ones.

If System Restore reports low disk space while there is more than 100 GB free, the problem is usually that the dedicated System Restore storage area (its internal quota) is full or not being managed correctly, not that the whole disk is full.

The additional message about a token not existing (0x800703F0) is a secondary error that occurs after the initial failure; the root cause is still the disk-space-related failure reported by 0x80070070.

To address this situation, adjust or reset System Restore’s storage so it can create new restore points:

    1. Reduce or temporarily disable System Restore protection on the affected drive so existing restore points are deleted and space is freed inside the System Restore quota.
    2. Re-enable protection and set an appropriate maximum size so new restore points can be created within the allowed quota.

Because System Restore manages its own storage, freeing general disk space alone may not resolve the error unless the System Restore quota is also adjusted.
