Dear Sir,

I have an upcoming oral examination on my microsoft teams. To ensure that I am appropriately prepared for the same, I have been trying to check how well the microsoft teams app is working on my laptop.

I have tried to make a number of calls but I found that the calls are not going through.

Can you please help me. I am an individual and currently not employed with any organization.

Regards

Dinesh Tyagi

In Teams open Settings -> Devices.

What exactly are the names of the audio/video devices selected in your Teams app?

Follow these steps to check and enable calling in Microsoft Teams and troubleshoot why calls are not going through.

    1. Confirm that calling is available in the account
    • In Teams (desktop or web), go to Calls in the left-hand navigation.
    • If there is no dial pad or phone-number option, the account likely does not have a calling plan or PSTN calling enabled. In that case, calls can only be made to other people using Teams, not to regular phone numbers.
    • To test, search for a contact by name or email in the Search box at the top and start a call to that contact inside Teams.
    1. Use the dial pad correctly (if available)
    • On desktop:
      • Go to Calls.
      • Use the dial pad on the left to enter the phone number, then select Call.
      • To call by name, type the person’s name in the dial pad area and select them from the dropdown.
    • On mobile:
      • Tap Calls.
      • Enter a phone number using the dial pad, or tap Contacts (if phone contacts access is enabled) and select the person to call.
    1. Check internet connection and device
    • Ensure the laptop is connected to a stable internet connection; Teams cannot make calls (including emergency calls) if it is offline.
    • Verify that an audio device (headset, speakers, microphone) is connected and working, especially if using Teams in a browser.
    1. If calls drop or fail to connect
    • If calls start but drop or show reconnecting messages, this is typically a network issue. Make sure the connection has adequate bandwidth and is stable.
    • Restart the Teams application and ensure the latest version is installed.
    • If using non-certified audio devices, try switching to a Teams-certified device for better reliability.
    1. If using Teams in a browser
    • Use a supported browser (for example, Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome).
    • Ensure the browser allows microphone access so calls can be placed and answered.

If, after these checks, there is still no ability to place calls, the account may not include phone calling capabilities; in that case, use Teams only to join the scheduled oral examination meeting via the meeting link provided, rather than trying to call a phone number.
