On DELL Vostro 15 3510 the sound disappears periodically in windows 11. If we reinstall original dell driver the sound is back for some time, but soon disappears again.

Hi.

On our DELL Vostro 15 3510 laptops the sound worked fine in windows 10. After upgrading til windows 11 we have a periodically problem with the sound disapperaring in edge and chrome. The test sound if you turn the volume up or down in the bottom right corner at the deskop is working as normal. So there is sound in the internal speakers.

We have tried to reinstall sound driver directly from dell.com and this get the sound working for some time. But the problem soon is back. I have tried to have a look at the sound settings in control panel to see if edge is not allowed to play sound, but everything is allowed here.

What steps can we take to fix this issue?

The problem was not there in windows 10.

Best regards.

    Hi,

In your case, did you try connecting the headphones to the jack and trying to listen to the sound? Does it stop there as well, or only through the internal speakers?

If you try to watch a video or listen to music in a browser, does it continue to play?

Do you have any third-party applications like VB-Audio?

    Thanks

Perform the following steps on one of the affected Vostro 15 3510 devices and verify if the issue stops recurring.

    1. Update the audio driver via Device Manager
      1. In the search box on the taskbar, type device manager, then select it.
      2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
      3. Right‑click the internal audio device (e.g., Realtek/Intel audio), select Update driver.
      4. Select Search automatically for drivers and complete the wizard.
      5. Test audio in Edge/Chrome.
    2. If the problem returns, clean‑reinstall the audio driver
      1. Open Device Manager again and expand Sound, video and game controllers.
      2. Right‑click the audio device and select Uninstall device.
      3. Check Attempt to remove the driver for this device (or Delete the driver software for this device on Windows 10/11 variants), then select Uninstall.
      4. Restart the PC (this will trigger automatic reinstallation of the audio driver).
      5. Test audio in Edge and Chrome after reboot.
    3. Try the generic Windows audio driver If the OEM driver keeps failing over time, switch to the generic driver that ships with Windows:
      1. Open Device Manager → expand Sound, video and game controllers.
      2. Right‑click the audio device → Update driver.
      3. Select Browse my computer for driversLet me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.
      4. Select the generic audio driver listed there and complete the installation.
      5. Restart if prompted and test audio in Edge/Chrome.
    4. If audio broke after a Windows Update, roll back the driver
      1. Open Device Manager → expand Sound, video and game controllers.
      2. Right‑click the audio device → Properties.
      3. Go to the Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver (if available).
      4. Follow the prompts and confirm with Yes.
      5. Test audio in Edge/Chrome.
    5. If rollback is unavailable or ineffective, restore from a system restore point Windows creates restore points when installing updates. Restoring to a point where audio was stable can resolve driver regressions. Follow the "Restore from a system restore point" steps in Recovery options in Windows referenced in the documentation.

If, after these steps, audio still periodically disappears only in browsers while system sounds continue to work, keep the generic Windows audio driver in place and avoid reinstalling the OEM driver, as the OEM package may not be fully stable on Windows 11 for this model.
