I have purchased Office 2024 for my Mac, and now my programs won't save or print unless I subscribe to 365

I Purchased Office 2024 for my Mac 1 year ago, Everything worked great until a few days ago when it refused to allow me to edit or save anything. It keeps telling me to activate & Subscribe to Microsoft 365, (which I do not want to do!). I am signed in under the correct account. Can anyone help guide me how to get it to recognize my purchased product?

Office 2024 for Mac is a one-time purchase and does not require a Microsoft 365 subscription, but the apps can fall into “reduced functionality mode” (view/print only, no editing or saving) if activation or licensing is not correct. The behavior described matches Office running as unlicensed or still tied to an old Microsoft 365 license.

Use these steps to get Office 2024 recognized and fully activated:

    1. Confirm the correct account and license
      • Make sure the Mac is signed into Office with the same Microsoft account that was used to purchase and redeem Office 2024.
      • If the apps are asking to “Subscribe to Microsoft 365,” they may still be trying to use an old Microsoft 365 license (for example, from an employer) instead of the Office 2024 license. In that case, the old subscription has likely expired and must be removed so the perpetual license can be used.
    2. Remove the old/incorrect Office license
      • The typical fix when a Mac keeps prompting for Microsoft 365 after purchasing a standalone Office version is to remove the previous license so the new one can be registered.
      • Follow the guidance to remove the existing Office license from the Mac, then sign back in with the account that owns Office 2024 so that the new license is applied. (In a similar scenario, the recommended solution was: “The Licensing of the software remains registered to the employer. Follow the instructions here to register your new license: Remove Office license.”)
    3. Reinstall and activate Office for Mac with the Office 2024 license
After cleaning up the old license, reinstall and activate:
      • If not already done, redeem and install Office 2024 from the account that owns the product.
      • On the Mac, open Finder > Applications, then start an Office app such as Word.
      • In the What’s New box, choose Get Started.
      • On the Sign in to activate Office screen, select Sign in.
      • Enter the email address associated with the Office 2024 purchase and select Next, then enter the password and select Sign in.
      • Office will check for a valid license and activate. If there are multiple licenses on the account (for example, both Microsoft 365 and Office 2024), follow the “activate with multiple licenses” guidance and choose the Office 2024 license.
      • When activation completes, select Start Using Word (or the app opened) and verify that editing and saving now work.
    4. If activation still fails or still prompts for Microsoft 365
      • Verify that Office 2024 was redeemed correctly to the current Microsoft account.
      • If the apps still show subscription prompts or remain in reduced functionality mode after removing old licenses and signing in with the correct account, use the dedicated Mac activation troubleshooting guidance: What to try if you can't install or activate Office for Mac.
      • If needed, contact Microsoft Support for help verifying the Office 2024 license and cleaning up any remaining subscription remnants.

Once the old Microsoft 365 subscription license is removed and Office is reactivated with the Office 2024 license, the apps should stop asking to subscribe and will allow full editing, saving, and printing again.

Despite all that has been thrown at you the issue is typically due to having a prior version or Free Trial installed which has not properly been removed. That results in a Licensing conflict. If my hunch is correct this Microsoft article should enable you ro resolve the conflict: Remove Office license

    Hi Susie,

To further check on this, can you please confirm if you just recently updated your Office?
If yes, then most likely that your Mac OS is not compatible to the latest version of Office. With that said, can you please help confirm what is the current version of your Mac OS? So I will then proceed with providing the correct Office build that will work on your Mac.
