Issue Type: Product Behavior / Platform Parity
Severity: Medium (UX Impact, Global)
Platforms Affected: Microsoft Teams for Android
Platforms Not Affected: Microsoft Teams for iOS

Issue Summary

On Microsoft Teams for Android, user profile pictures appear pixelated and low‑resolution when the device is connected to mobile (cellular) data, but appear clear and high‑resolution when connected to Wi‑Fi.
The same user accounts and profile photos appear clear on both mobile data and Wi‑Fi on iOS, demonstrating a platform‑specific difference in behavior.

This behavior is consistent, reproducible, and globally observed among Android users.

Expected Behavior

Profile pictures should render at consistent visual quality across network types, similar to the behavior observed on Teams for iOS, or Teams should re‑request a higher‑resolution image when a profile photo is displayed at larger sizes (e.g., calling screen).

Actual Behavior

  • On Android + mobile data:
    • Teams downloads a low‑resolution thumbnail of profile photos
      • The image is upscaled when shown in the calling screen
        • Results in visible pixelation
        • On Android + Wi‑Fi:
          • Teams downloads the full‑resolution profile image
          • On iOS (mobile data & Wi‑Fi):
            • Profile pictures remain high‑resolution and clear

Scope of Impact

  • Affects all profile pictures, including internal and external users
  • Observed across multiple Android devices, carriers, and regions
  • Not related to:
    • Profile image size or format
      • Account type or tenant
        • Network speed (including 5G)
          • MDM or admin policies

This confirms the issue is not user‑specific or tenant‑specific, but global and platform‑dependent.

    Hi @Avinash More

I hope you are doing well, and thank you for sharing the detailed findings regarding profile photo quality in Microsoft Teams for Android. I’ve reviewed the behavior carefully and would like to clarify the recommended next steps, along with what you can realistically expect from each path.

Based on current evidence, this behavior appears to be a Teams Android client‑side design difference, particularly in how profile images are handled on cellular networks. There are no tenant, policy, or administrative settings available within your environment to change this behavior.

I do recommend opening a Microsoft support ticket, not because it guarantees a fix, but because it serves an important purpose:

    • Allows Microsoft Support to reproduce and formally validate the behavior
    • Confirms the issue as product behavior rather than customer configuration
    • Enables escalation to the Teams Android engineering team
    • Ensures the issue is officially tracked within Microsoft

It is important to note that, since this is likely a product behavior or design decision, Microsoft Support may not be able to provide an immediate resolution or workaround. The value of the support case is primarily validation, documentation, and escalation, rather than direct remediation.

For guidance on how to request support in the admin center, please refer to: Get support - Microsoft 365 admin.

In parallel, I recommend submitting product feedback to the Microsoft Teams product team via the Feedback Portal. This is the appropriate channel to address:

    • Platform parity differences between Android and iOS
    • User experience impact related to image quality
    • Potential design improvements in future releases

Product feedback is especially important if the behavior is ultimately classified as “by design,” as it is the mechanism through which such designs are reviewed and reprioritized.

This combined approach gives the issue the highest visibility and best chance of being addressed, while setting appropriate expectations regarding timelines and outcomes.

Once you’ve submitted your feedback, feel free to share the link here. I’d be happy to upvote it to help increase its visibility.  Moreover, if you are unable to submit feedback, please inform me at your convenience. In that case, I will gladly assist by submitting it on your behalf to ensure your request is properly captured.

Additionally, as other users have raised similar concerns and may not be aware of where to share their feedback, I hope this response helps clarify the situation and suggests a potential next step. Upvoting this information can make it more visible to others in the community who may be facing the same issue, making it easier for them to find guidance and contribute their feedback as well.

Thank you again for your time and for raising this important usability concern. If you have any further questions or need additional assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Wishing you a smooth rest of your day.
