Stock data type is working but the Insert data feature is broken.

This was an issue posted 28 months ago but exactly the same thing happened to me on April 27th

======================================

I opened an existing spreadsheet with existing Stock Data (many fields) that was working fine.

The stock data fields are all garbage now. Most show '#NAME?'. The contents look like '=_FV(Q10,"Name")'.

When I add a new stock ticker field ('AAPL') and make that into a Stock Data field, that step does work. That field looks correct. Then when I try to use the add column field, it just doesn't do anything. When I try using a formula like '=A1.Beta', I receive an error dialog box saying that the formula is not recognized (with hints about using a ' to make a formula not a formula, etc.).

I tried creating a New spreadsheet and had the same issues.

Basically, most of the Stock Data functionality is BROKEN and NOT WORKING at all!

See attached screenshots below.

I'm using Office 365 on a Mac desktop.

Microsoft Excel for Mac

Version 16.108

The problem resolved after 48 hours. Nothing I did, but also no obvious reason

    Hi, Mike Fenster

The _FV and #NAME? errors usually mean Excel is seeing the Stocks field formulas, but the desktop app is not properly recognizing the linked-data feature. Since the same file may still work elsewhere, this does not necessarily mean the workbook itself is damaged.

Besides the solutions provided by the Q&A Assist, here are some suggestions you can try:

First, test the same workbook in Excel for the web. If Stocks fields work there, use that as a temporary workaround and avoid saving over your main copy from the Mac app.

In Excel for Mac, go to Excel > Preferences > Privacy, and make sure Connected Experiences are enabled, then fully quit Excel and reopen it.

It is suggested that you run Microsoft’s Office License Removal Tool for Mac, restart the Mac, then sign back into Office. This can refresh the Microsoft 365 license check that Stocks depends on.

If this started right after 16.108, it is recommended that you temporarily roll back to an earlier working Excel build until Microsoft fixes the current build.

Thank you for your patience in reading, I hope this information has been helpful to you.

The behavior described matches a regression in Excel’s linked data types (Stocks) where:

    • Existing linked-stock formulas (e.g. =_FV(Q10,"Name") or =A1.Beta) start returning #NAME?.
    • The Insert Data / Add Column feature for Stocks stops inserting fields.
    • Creating a new workbook does not resolve the issue.

From the provided context, there are two key points:

    1. Stocks and Geography are linked data types that depend on an online connection and specific language settings. If the linked data type or its fields are not recognized, Excel can return #FIELD! or #NAME? errors when referencing fields.
    2. There is a history of builds where “Stocks and Geography data types were not available” and this was fixed in subsequent updates for Excel for Mac.

    Given that:

    • The stock data type conversion itself still works (the ticker converts and shows as a linked data type), but
    • Field extraction (Insert Data / Add Column, or formulas like =A1.Beta) fails,

this aligns with a build-specific bug in Excel for Mac that affects the Stocks data type field access, similar to the previously noted issue where “Stocks and Geography data types were not available” and later fixed.

    Actionable steps:

    1. Update Excel for Mac to the latest build
      • The release notes show prior issues with Stocks/Geography data types that were fixed in later builds. Updating to the latest version is the primary remediation for build-specific regressions.
      • Open Excel → Help → Check for Updates (or use Microsoft AutoUpdate) and install all available updates.
      • After updating, restart Excel and re-open the workbook to see if the Insert Data / Add Column and formulas like =A1.Beta work again.
    2. Verify linked data type behavior after update
      • In a new workbook, type a ticker (e.g., AAPL), select the cell, then Data → Stocks.
      • Once converted (stock icon appears), use the Add Column button to insert fields such as Price or Change.
      • Optionally, test a formula referencing the linked data type field (for example, using the field picker / Insert Data rather than typing the field name manually) to confirm that #NAME? no longer appears.
    3. Check for #FIELD! conditions if errors persist If, after updating, errors persist, the #FIELD! guidance applies:
      • Ensure the referenced cell actually contains a linked data type (Stocks) and not plain text.
      • Ensure the field being referenced exists for that data type and is not protected or in an unreadable format.
      • Re-insert the field via the Add Column button instead of reusing old formulas, in case the field names or internal representation changed.
    4. Confirm account and language prerequisites
      • Stocks data type requires a Microsoft 365 or free Microsoft Account and one of the supported editing languages (English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, or Portuguese) added in Office Language Preferences. If these prerequisites are not met, linked data types and their fields may not function correctly.

If the issue continues even after updating to the latest Excel for Mac build and confirming prerequisites, this would indicate a new regression in the current channel, and it should be reported via Excel’s feedback mechanism (Help → Feedback) so it can be addressed in a subsequent build.
