Hi there,
Thank you for posting this.
I understand how troublesome it is when your CD/DVD drive suddenly disappears and prevents you from continuing your work. Here is what I recommend that you do:
Check if Windows can still detect the drive
- Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
- Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives.
- If the drive appears, right‑click it and select Uninstall device.
- Restart your computer then windows will automatically reinstall the driver.
Show hidden devices in device manager
- In Device Manager, click View.
- Select Show hidden devices.
- Check again under DVD/CD-ROM drives.
- If the drive appears but is disabled, right‑click it and choose Enable device.
Remove and reinstall IDE/ATAPI controllers
- In Device Manager, expand IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.
- Right‑click each controller and select Uninstall device.
- Restart the PC and allow Windows to reinstall them automatically.
Fix corrupted registry entries (common cause)
- Press Windows + R, type
regedit, and press Enter. - Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SYSTEM \CurrentControlSet \Control \Class {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
- In the right pane: Delete UpperFilters and LowerFilters if they exist.
- Then restart your device.
Verify the drive is enabled in BIOS/UEFI
- Restart your PC and enter BIOS/UEFI (usually F2, Del, or Esc).
- Confirm the optical drive is listed and enabled.
