I have a phantom CD Drive (E) that I cannot get rid of. Also I have a Code 19 error because of this drive.

Two related problems. 1- I have a phantom CD Drive (E) that I cannot delete, remove or unregister.

2- I have a code 19 error on my windows 10 Lenovo Laptop. The error reads, "Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)". I am using an external CD drive. When I plugged it into the laptop, I ruined that drive. Now nothing works with it. Bought a 2nd one. Same problem. Tried to use it on an older laptop. It was trashed there also. Would not work.

Steps I have taken. A- In the registry, I searched for and removed the Lower Filter content (elbyCDFL) for the cd drive that I deleted. Rebooted. Did nothing to remove the E drive or stop the problem. B- I do NOT have a restore point so I could not go back in time. C- Searched for hidden devices in the device manager. The E drive did not show up.

I know the registry is corrupted but don't know how to proceed. Need genius technical support.

Well you have finally done it. The network drive has been disconnected. Finally the CD Drive (E) has been removed. I rebooted the computer and it is still gone. I can't thank you enough for your hard work and clear and concise instructions. Many Many thanks to you.

You're most welcome :) Glad to have helped.

Let's check if the phantom CD drive is caused by a third-party driver. Please share your Farbar scan logs for analysis.

    • Download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool 64-bit FRST64.exe
    • If the OS language is not English, rename FRST64.exe to FRST64English.exe.
    • Run the program. Don't check or uncheck any options. Click "Scan".
    • Add the two logs, FRST.txt and Addition.txt, to a zip archive.
    • Share the zip file on OneDrive or GoFile.io, and post the link here.

Note: If Microsoft Edge or Chrome mislabels the Farbar Scanner executable as PUA/malware, choose to keep it by tapping … in the bottom bar, choosing Keep, and then choosing Keep anyway in the dialog that appears. See this screenshot. It's a safe tool used in most antimalware forums.

    Hi,

Please open Command Prompt and run the following commands to get the list of filter drivers from the registry:

    reg query "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class" /f *erfilters* /s

Copy the output and post in in your reply.

Upload the following file in your next reply.:

    C:\Windows\INF\Setupapi.dev.log
