Unable to find the recorded video of MsTeams meeting

2026-04-30T05:01:13.91+00:00

Hello,

I was the host of a virtual meeting and clicked the Record button at the start. I also saw the usual recording indicator (the frame around the active speaker) that I typically see during recorded calls. However, when the meeting ended, I closed the call without clicking Stop Recording.

Now I am unable to find the video recording. I also do not see the usual "Start recording" / "Stop recording" indicator in the chat history as I normally would.

Could you please advise how I can access the recording?

Thank you very much for your assistance.

Hi @Pham Quynh Linh (Management Office - HO)

In Microsoft Teams, a recording automatically stops when the meeting ends, even if you do not manually click Stop recording. However, for a recording to be saved successfully, Teams must be able to finalize and process it after the meeting ends.

Normally, a completed recording appears in the meeting chat, in the organizer’s OneDrive under the Recordings folder, or in SharePoint for channel meetings. If it does not appear in any of these locations after several hours (or up to 24 hours), the recording was likely not saved and cannot be recovered.

If you want to check further, navigate to OneDrive > Recordings in your OneDrive or SharePoint (if applicable) after up to 24 hours, make sure to confirm that there is no other participant was a co‑organizer who might have the recording.

Regarding to your concern that you cannot find the video recording and do not see the usual “Start recording” / “Stop recording” messages in the chat history, one possibility is that recording is not allowed by your IT Admin or your Teams app run into a temporary conflict.

To make sure, kindly check the meeting via Teams on the web (https://teams.microsoft.com) to see if the recording appears there. You may also want to reset or clear the Teams cache by following this article: Clear the Teams client cache - Microsoft Teams | Microsoft Learn and then sign back in to check if it can resolve the issue.

For my recommendation to avoid this issue occurs again, kindly wait for 10-15 seconds after ending the meeting before closing Teams, check the systems messages in chat showing recording start/stop recording status and also assign a co-organizer as a backup when recording.

Based on the described behavior, the recording most likely never started or was not successfully saved.

Key points from the documented behavior:

    1. When a recording successfully starts:
      • Teams posts a system message in the meeting chat indicating that recording has started.
      • If this message is not present, the recording did not start and cannot be recovered.
      From the documentation:
      • If there is no message indicating that the recording started, the recording most likely didn’t start and can’t be recovered.
      • A recording only starts after selecting Start recording and then confirming in the dialog.
    2. Where recordings should appear when they do start:
      • After the recording stops, a recording entry appears in the meeting chat.
      • For non-channel meetings, the file is saved in the Recordings folder in the meeting organizer’s OneDrive for Business.
      • For channel meetings, the file is saved in the channel’s Files tab (SharePoint site).
    3. What to check now:
      1. Open the meeting chat and look for the system message that recording started. If it is not there, the recording did not start and there is no retrievable file.
      2. If there is a message that recording started, but no file:
        • Check the organizer’s OneDrive Recordings folder (for non-channel meetings) or the team’s channel Files tab (for channel meetings).
        • Check the OneDrive recycle bin and second-stage recycle bin in case the file was deleted or expired.
      3. If the recording failed to upload to OneDrive/SharePoint, Teams may show a message in the chat indicating that the recording is stored temporarily for 21 days, with options to retry upload or download. If that message is not present, there is no temporary copy to recover.

Given that there is no “Start recording/Stop recording” indicator in the chat and no recording entry, the meeting recording was not successfully started or saved and cannot be accessed or recovered.

For future meetings, ensure that after selecting More actions → Start recording, the confirmation dialog is completed (select Confirm) and that the “recording started” system message appears in the chat.
