Copilot can be temporarily turned off in the Microsoft 365 apps being used. The options depend on the app and device.
For Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote on Windows or Mac (with a Microsoft account):
- Open the app (for example, Word).
- Windows: go to File > Options > Copilot. Mac: go to Word > Preferences > Copilot (under Authoring and Proofing Tools).
- Clear the Enable Copilot checkbox.
- Select OK (Windows) or close Preferences (Mac), then restart the app.
This disables Copilot features in that app on that device until the checkbox is turned back on. It affects anyone using that app on that device.
Notes:
- The Enable Copilot checkbox is available only in supported versions of the apps; if it is missing, the app may need to be updated.
- Copilot cannot be turned off in the iOS, Android, or web versions of Word, Excel, or PowerPoint; in those cases, Copilot can only be disabled via privacy settings, which also turns off other connected experiences.
For Outlook with a Microsoft account:
- Open Outlook on the platform being used.
- Use the Turn on Copilot toggle:
- Android/iOS/Mac: Quick Settings > Copilot.
- Web: Settings > Copilot.
- Windows (new Outlook): Settings > Copilot.
- Turn off the Turn on Copilot toggle.
Turning Copilot off in Outlook applies to that account across all Outlook clients where the same account is signed in.
If the Enable Copilot checkbox is not yet available in the desktop apps and Copilot must be fully disabled, Copilot can be turned off by changing the account’s privacy settings. Be aware this also disables other features such as suggested replies in Outlook, text predictions in Word, PowerPoint Designer, and automatic alt text for images, as described under connected experiences.
For Teams calls in an organizational environment, an admin can disable Copilot for calls via PowerShell:
Set-CsTeamsCallingPolicy -Identity <policy name> -Copilot Disabled
This turns off Copilot for calls for users assigned to that calling policy.
