Cosmosdb is being in "deleting state" from past 1 week

If your Azure Cosmos DB account has been in a “Deleting” state for over a week, it usually means the delete operation hasn’t completed successfully or is being blocked.

A couple of quick checks that often help:

• Check for resource locks A Delete or ReadOnly lock on the resource group or the Cosmos DB account will prevent deletion from completing. You can review this in the portal under Resource Group > Locks, or via CLI: az lock list --resource-group <your-rg> If any locks are present, remove them and retry.
• Confirm whether the resource still exists Sometimes the portal continues to show “Deleting” due to caching. You can verify using: az cosmosdb show -g <your-rg> -n <your-account> If this returns Not Found, the account has already been deleted and the issue is only visual.
• Review the Activity Log Go to Monitor > Activity Log and filter for delete operations on the Cosmos DB account. Any failure entries there typically indicate what’s blocking the operation.
• Retry deletion via CLI If the account still exists, try deleting again using: az cosmosdb delete -g <your-rg> -n <your-account> --yes

If the resource continues to remain in the “Deleting” state after these checks, it generally requires backend intervention. In that case, raising a support request would be the best next step so the engineering team can force-complete the deletion.
