How can I stop Windows updates corrupting my desktop?

I have a number of useful apps on my desktop which have been there for years. Frequently, updates from MS remove those icons. Then in the middle of a normal job, I have to try to remember, then re-find the app on my C: drive, put the icon back on the desktop in order to use it. The app is not found by Search, but is there. Ridiculous!

Why cannot MS just leave the Desktop alone?

How can I stop this disruption?

    Hello velson Horie,

I'm sorry you're dealing with this — it's genuinely frustrating when icons you rely on keep vanishing mid-task.

Before suggesting a fix, I'd like to narrow down what's actually happening, because "icons disappearing after updates" can come from a few different causes and each has a different solution.

Could you help me with three quick details?

    1. Where do these shortcuts point to? Are the apps installed locally on your C: drive, or do the shortcuts point to folders/files on OneDrive, a network share, or an external/USB drive?
    2. When an icon disappears from the desktop, is the shortcut file also gone from C:\Users\<your username>\Desktop in File Explorer — or is it still sitting in that folder but just not showing on the desktop itself?
    3. Could you name one specific app whose icon went missing most recently? An example helps me check if it matches a known pattern.

I’ll wait for your reply with the requested details so we can continue.
