My Surface Pro 11 (Snapdragon) is overheating and loses battery life very quickly eventhough it is brand new.

My Surface Pro’s battery life has been surprisingly poor. With just two apps open, it only lasts around 3-4 hours, even at 50% brightness and it still gets noticeably hot. For a device that’s meant to be the newest model, this is quite underwhelming. What’s equally frustrating is the support experience it’s been extremely difficult to contact Microsoft, and I haven’t been able to speak to a real person due to the reliance on AI automation. Overall, it’s a disappointing experience. If anyone has advice, I’d appreciate it.

    Hi George Ioannou,

I completely understand your concern about only getting a few hours of battery life and noticing heat, especially on a brand‑new Surface. Just wondering, have you tried out the checks suggested by the Q&A Assist? And did anything improve?

If after applying all the recommendations, you’re still seeing short battery life and noticeable heat under minimal load, that’s not normal behavior for a new Surface. This usually points to either a firmware or driver issue, or a potential hardware fault.

In those cases, it’s totally reasonable for you to request device repair/replacement, especially since it is brand new. The good news is that this process is handled separately from the usual support line, so you won’t face the same situation as before:

    1. Refer to How to get service or repair for Surface - Microsoft Support
    2. Sign in at account.microsoft.com/devices/select-device-for-repair
    3. If your Surface Pro isn't registered yet, select Register device.
    4. If the device is already registered, choose it and click Next.
    5. Follow the instructions to complete your service order.

I wish I could provide more direct help, but if your device continues to perform below expectations, it may point to a hardware issue. Unfortunately, this is a user‑to‑user forum, so we don’t have access to device diagnostics or the ability to arrange replacements. I hope you can get the help you need.

Surface Pro (11th Edition) battery life and temperature depend heavily on workload, background activity, and configuration. For reference, Microsoft’s own tests for the Snapdragon-based Surface Pro (11th Edition - Wi‑Fi) show:

    • Up to 14 hours of local video playback (offline, using a test video, 150 nits brightness, default settings)
    • Up to 10 hours of active web usage under controlled conditions

For the 5G model, Microsoft measures up to 9 hours of active web usage with cellular enabled under similar controlled test conditions.

In real use, especially with active apps, background processes, and higher performance workloads, actual battery life can be significantly lower than these lab results. Heat will also increase when the device is under sustained load.

To improve both battery life and thermals on a new Surface Pro (11th Edition):

    1. Use Windows 11 power settings and recommendations
      • Open Start > Settings > System > Power & battery.
      • In Energy recommendations, select Apply all or selectively apply suggestions that reduce power usage (for example, lower screen brightness, shorten screen timeout, and adjust sleep settings).
      • In Battery usage, identify apps that consume the most power and close or uninstall those that are not needed, or avoid running them on battery.
    2. Check for updates and device health in Surface app
      • Open the Surface app.
      • Go to Help & support and install any available updates via Windows Update.
      • Use Get help in the Surface app if it reports issues.
    3. Optimize battery health practices
      • Avoid using or charging the device in very hot environments; Surface devices are designed to operate between 0°C and 35°C.
      • Avoid leaving the device plugged in at 100% charge for long periods; regularly let the battery discharge below 50% before recharging when possible, or use Battery Limit Mode if the device must stay plugged in continuously.
    4. Compare expectations with documented estimates
      • If, after applying energy recommendations and updates, battery life remains around 3–4 hours with only light workloads (for example, basic web browsing and productivity apps at moderate brightness), this is significantly below the “up to 9–10 hours of active web usage” Microsoft measures for the Surface Pro (11th Edition) under test conditions.
      • Combined with noticeable heat under light use on a brand-new device, this can indicate a hardware or firmware issue.

If the device continues to overheat and deliver only 3–4 hours of battery life under light use after applying the steps above, contacting Microsoft support for further diagnostics or a possible replacement is appropriate, especially since the device is new.
