Chrome shows “didn’t shut down properly – Restore?” when it detects the previous browser session ended unexpectedly (for example, Windows was powered off or crashed while Chrome was still running). The message itself is normal and is Chrome’s way of offering to reopen tabs.
To stop seeing it frequently, focus on shutting down Windows cleanly and closing Chrome before power off:
- Close Chrome before shutdown
- Before turning off the PC, close all Chrome windows.
- Wait a few seconds to let Chrome finish writing its session data.
- Use normal Windows shutdown
- Use Start menu → Power → Shut down.
- Avoid holding the power button or forcing shutdown unless the system is frozen. Forced shutdowns can cause “didn’t shut down properly” messages in browsers and, in some cases, more serious startup issues.
- Avoid powering off during sleep/hibernation transitions
- Do not cut power or hold the power button while the PC is entering sleep or hibernation. Similar situations are documented to cause startup/blank-screen issues after shutdown or hibernation.
- If Windows is not shutting down cleanly
- If the PC sometimes hangs on shutdown or restarts to a blank/black screen after shutdown or hibernation, that indicates a Windows or firmware issue rather than a Chrome problem. In such cases, follow platform-specific workarounds (for example, adjusting UEFI/firmware options or storage acceleration settings) as documented for systems that fail to start properly after shutdown/hibernation.
When Chrome does show the “Restore” prompt, choosing Restore is safe; it just reopens the previous tabs. The key is to ensure Windows and Chrome both close normally so the prompt appears only rarely.
