  1. I work on a Macbook Pro, and use an external keyboard that has a 'calculator pad on the right hand side. When creating a column of figures I previously was able to use the calculator pad and it recognised the '.' as the separator between the Rands and cents i.e R30.50 - it now does not do that and requires R30,50. How do i fix it

The first consideration is What has changed on the Mac?

The most common cause is a matter of updates. Confirm that your version of macOS is fully updated as well as your Office software. Additionally, check the device manufacturer's support site for an updated driver for that specific keyboard.

For the time being you can disregard the message from the Q&A Assist bot. That only needs to be done if deviating from the Operating System settings is required. Excel takes uses the macOS settings for that as well as related features. If all is current but the issue persists, quit all Programs then go to > System Settings> General> Language & Region to confirm the correct choices for Region & for Number Format as well as any others which need to be adjusted. Restart the Mac after making any changes.

Excel is following the current regional settings, which now define the comma (,) as the decimal symbol instead of the period (.). To make the numeric keypad’s . work again as the decimal separator in Excel, change the separator settings in Excel (and optionally at system level):

    1. In Excel, open File > Options.
    2. Select the Advanced tab.
    3. Under Editing options, clear the Use system separators checkbox.
    4. In Decimal separator, type a period ..
    5. In Thousands separator, type a comma , (or leave it as preferred).
    6. Select OK.

This forces Excel to interpret . from the calculator pad as the decimal between Rands and cents (for example, R30.50).

For a permanent, system-wide change that affects all applications, adjust the regional/number format settings in macOS so that the decimal symbol is . and the thousands separator is ,. Excel will then follow those system separators when Use system separators is enabled.
