My excel file somehow saved as another excel file. I can not recover previous version. Microsoft support agent sent me here to ask question. What are my options?

Thanks! If Version History in OneDrive is empty, that usually means either:

The file wasn’t syncing at the time, or

It was saved as a completely new file (so no history exists for the original)

Please try to go to File > Open > Recent, look for any similar files.

Or open File Explorer and navigate to check if you see this path C:\Users\YourUsername\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\UnsavedFiles or

    C:\Users\YourUsername\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel

    Hi! Let me help you.

    Do you have OneDrive enabled?

Please check the File version history.

Click File → Info → Version History

Also, please check Recover Unsaved Workbooks under Manage Workbook under Info as well.

But if the file was overwritten locally and

You saved over the file with no version history, backup / AutoRecover

Then, unfortunately, Excel cannot undo an overwrite after closing the file. At that point, recovery becomes very unlikely without third-party recovery tools—and even those rarely recover overwritten data (they work better for deleted files, not replaced ones).
