how to call Japan

I understand that you used Skype before to call phone numbers in Japan and would like to know whether Microsoft Teams Free can be used for the same purpose.

The Q&A Assist answer is generally correct. Did you have a chance to try the Skype Dial Pad option it mentioned?

I would like to add one clarification: Microsoft Teams Free does not offer a new paid phone-calling plan by itself. However, if you already have active Skype Credit, an active Skype calling subscription, or an active Skype Number, you may still be able to use Skype Dial Pad from the Skype web portal or within Teams Free to call landline or mobile numbers. Please check the following:

1. Sign in at https://calling.web.skype.com with the same Skype/Microsoft account that has your Skype Credit or subscription.
2. If the Dial Pad opens, enter the Japan phone number and select Call.
3. If you want to check from Teams Free, update Teams Free to the latest version, sign in with the same Skype account, then check whether Skype Dial Pad appears under Settings and more.
4. If Skype Dial Pad does not appear, please check whether your Skype Credit or subscription is still active. If the credit is inactive, you may need to reactivate it from your Skype account page first.

If you do not have active Skype Credit or an active Skype calling subscription, Teams Free cannot be used to buy a new paid calling plan for calling Japanese landline or mobile numbers. Teams Free can still be used for internet-based audio or video calls with other Teams users.

Could you please confirm whether you are trying to call a Japanese landline/mobile number using existing Skype Credit, or whether you are trying to call another Teams user in Japan?

Calls to phone numbers (including numbers in Japan) are not supported in Microsoft Teams Free.

Teams Free only supports calling other Teams users (audio/video over the internet). It does not provide phone calling (PSTN) features or support for Skype Numbers.

To continue calling Japanese phone numbers with existing Skype credit or subscriptions, use the Skype Dial Pad on the web at calling.web.skype.com, provided there is still active credit or a calling subscription on the Skype account.

For business scenarios, phone calling options (including international calling) are only available in Microsoft Teams with a business plan and the appropriate Teams Phone licensing.
