Microsoft word - I can't save or access documents

I am no longer able to save word documents. I am also unable to open previously saved word documents - a pop up says "Grant File Access" Additional permissions are required to access the following files... then it says "Microsoft Word needs access to the file named [. ]. Select the item to grant access." It won't let me select the file. Please help.

    Are you using Microsoft Word on Window or MacOS?

    If possible, please also let me know where the affected files are saved such as Desktop/Documents, OneDrive, or an external drive since the file location can also affect access behavior.
