Windows 11, version 25H@ (repair version), has been sitting at "installing - 20%" for a few hours, then it goes back to 0% again.

Also, there was a Windows update on my laptop last night. Every time I open my Yahoo email, the two-monitor setup turns gray, and I have to restart my computer to get my monitor working again. It never happened before the last night window upgrade.

    Hi, good day!

Can you take a screenshot of your Update history showing recently installed updates?

Note: Don't include any personal information or sensitive data as Microsoft Q&A is a public forum

Please try the Repair version again but keep in mind the following things below.

Few things to check on the PC

    • Unplug all external peripherals except for the Mouse, Keyboard, and LAN cable before starting
    • Disable or uninstall any third-party Antivirus program to prevent it from interfering with the upgrade

I look forward to your update and am happy to continue working with you until the issue is resolved. If you find the answer helpful, please click "Accept Answer" and consider upvoting it. Otherwise, please keep me posted by clicking "Add comment" below instead of selecting Yes or No.

For the Windows 11, version 25H2 update stuck at 20% and then dropping back to 0%, and the display issues after the recent update, use these steps:

    1. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
      1. Select Start > Settings > System.
      2. Select Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
      3. Find Windows Update and select Run.
      4. Follow the on-screen instructions and then try the update again from Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
    2. Check internet connection and disk space
      • Ensure the PC is online: Start > Settings > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi and confirm it is connected.
      • Verify free space: at least 20 GB is required for a 64‑bit OS upgrade. If space is low, free space using the guidance in Free up drive space in Windows (see reference).
    3. Repair system files, then retry the update
      1. In the taskbar search box, type command prompt.
      2. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
      3. Run:
              DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Wait for “The operation completed successfully.”
      4. Then run:
              sfc /scannow

        Wait until it reaches 100%.
      5. Close Command Prompt and run Windows Update again.
    4. Perform a clean restart (clean boot) and update again
      • Perform a clean restart so only minimal drivers and startup programs load. This helps avoid conflicts that can cause the update to loop from 20% back to 0%. Follow the steps in How to perform a clean boot in Windows (see reference), then:
        • After the clean boot, go to Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates and install the 25H2 update again.
    5. If the update still fails repeatedly
      • Consider performing an in-place repair/upgrade to Windows 11 25H2 using the official ISO as described in the referenced Q&A (download the Windows 11 ISO from the Microsoft software download page, mount it, run Setup, choose to keep personal files and apps, and complete the upgrade). This can repair components that cause update loops.
    6. Address the display turning gray when opening Yahoo Mail Because this started immediately after the update, it is likely related to graphics drivers or display handling:
      • First complete the steps above so Windows is fully updated and system files are repaired.
      • If the issue persists after the update succeeds, perform a clean restart again and test Yahoo Mail.
      • If the problem only occurs in a normal boot but not in a clean boot, a third‑party app (for example, display/overlay software) may be conflicting; keep it disabled or update/uninstall it.

If, after all of these steps, the system remains unstable (gray screens, monitor issues), consider a Reset this PC with Keep my files from Settings > System > Recovery as a last resort, which reinstalls Windows while preserving personal files.
