Record and Transcribe overwrote the file I needed when I rejoined

I recently did an interview on Microsoft Teams because I liked the record and transcribe tool. When I was finishing my meeting, I got disconnected from the call and rejoined right away. However, when I went to get my transcription, it only had the recording/transcription from when I joined the second time, but I really need the first section. It seemed to overwrite the initial recording. Is there any way to recover the initial recording?

    Dear @Autumn,

I’m really sorry this happened especially since it was an important interview, I completely understand how concerning it is to lose part of the recording and transcript.

Based on how Microsoft Teams currently handles recordings and transcription, when a meeting is interrupted (for example, due to a disconnect) and then restarted after rejoining, the recording and transcription may begin a new session. In some scenarios, Teams can replace the earlier recording instead of saving it as a separate file. As a result, the final recording and transcript may only reflect the portion after you rejoined the meeting.

At this time, Teams does not provide a built-in way to recover an earlier portion if it was overwritten during the same meeting session. However, I recommend trying the following checks, as they represent the only possible recovery paths:

    • Check the meeting organizer’s OneDrive (Recordings folder) or associated SharePoint site to see if another version or partial recording was created.
    • Review the OneDrive Recycle Bin in case an earlier file was overwritten and moved there.
    • Open the original meeting chat or calendar recap to confirm whether multiple recording links were generated.

If the earlier recording segment is not found in these locations, unfortunately it is likely that it was not retained by the service and cannot be recovered.

For future sessions especially important ones like interviews, I recommend enabling automatic recording/transcription from the start of the meeting, and if possible, having a backup recording (for example, another participant recording or an external tool where permitted). This can help prevent data loss if the meeting is interrupted.

I recognize that this limitation can be inconvenient, and I truly appreciate your feedback.
