I am having a laptop with Windows 11. The moment I start the laptop, the application 'Calculator' starts opening continuously multiple times resulting in hanging. I try to close them but nothing happens. Then I have to force shut down the laptop. After starting again, the same issue appears

In order to troubleshoot, i have formatted it 2-3 times and also performed reset of the Application Calculator. But that does not help.

Kindly help to troubleshoot this.

This is unlikely to be a Windows problem, usually this is caused by a keyboard problem.

    1

Open Command Prompt, then paste in this command and press Enter:

    msdt.exe -id KeyboardDiagnostic

Run that Keyboard Troubleshooter to see if that can solve the problem.

    2

If that does not resolve this for you

    Open Device Manager

    Expand the Keyboards section

Right click your keyboard and choose 'Uninstall'

    Then restart your PC

    3

If the problem is still not resolved:

Connect another external keyboard to your system, is the same problem occurring with that keyboard?

Follow these steps to isolate and stop Calculator from launching repeatedly.

    1. Check for unexpected restarts or system errors
If Windows is crashing or restarting in the background, it can repeatedly reopen apps:
    • When the device hangs or restarts, note if a blue or black error screen appears with a stop code.
    • If so, follow the guidance in Troubleshooting Windows unexpected restarts and stop code errors to identify faulty drivers, hardware, or software that might be triggering instability.
    1. Perform a clean boot to isolate startup software
A third‑party app, service, or script may be launching Calculator in a loop. Use a clean‑boot style isolation:
    2. Sign in with an administrator account.
    3. Select Search, type msconfig, and open System Configuration.
    4. Go to the Services tab and select Hide all Microsoft services.
    5. Select all check boxes in the upper half of the Service list.
    6. Select OK, then restart Windows.
    7. After restart, check whether Calculator still opens repeatedly:
      • If the problem still occurs, one of the checked services is causing it. Repeat steps 1–6, but in step 4 clear the lower half of the boxes you previously selected, and test again.
      • If the problem does not occur, the checked services are not the cause. Repeat steps 1–6, but in step 4 turn on the upper half of the boxes you cleared last time, and test again.
      • Continue until the problematic service is isolated. Once a single service is identified, disable or uninstall the related software.
    8. If no service is responsible, go to the Startup tab in System Configuration and select Open Task Manager. On Startup apps in Task Manager:
      • Re‑enable the upper half of previously disabled startup items, restart, and test.
      • If the issue appears, the cause is among those items; if not, test the other half.
      • Narrow down to the single startup app that triggers Calculator and disable or uninstall it.
    9. Check for incompatible or misbehaving apps
If the issue started after installing a specific app (for example, a keyboard macro tool, automation utility, or enhancement like PowerToys), treat it as potentially incompatible:
    • Go to Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
    • Uninstall any recently added or suspicious apps one by one, restarting and checking after each removal.
    • If needed, reinstall safe apps later from Microsoft Store or the manufacturer’s site.
    1. Repair or reset built‑in apps and Store components
If Calculator or other Microsoft Store apps are misbehaving:
    • Follow Fix problems with apps from Microsoft Store for Windows 11:
      • Ensure Windows is fully updated: Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
      • Open Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates to update Store and apps.
      • Use Repair or reset your apps as described in Repair or Remove programs in Windows.
      • If needed, uninstall and reinstall Calculator from Microsoft Store > Library.
    1. Check for group policy or permissions issues (if joined to a domain)
On managed or domain‑joined devices, incorrect policies or permissions can cause odd app behavior:
    • Compare with a working device in an OU without restrictive policies.
    • If group policies are suspected and local testing is allowed, reset Local Group Policy settings via an elevated Command Prompt as described in Modern, Inbox, and Microsoft Store Apps troubleshooting guidance, then run gpupdate /force and restart.
    • Be aware this resets local policy settings to defaults and may affect other configurations.

If, after a clean boot and removal of non‑Microsoft startup items, Calculator still opens repeatedly even in this minimal state, the next step is to investigate for system‑level corruption or hardware issues following the stop‑code/BSOD troubleshooting guidance.
