Hello,

I registered the CALs for a Windows Server 2022 system and received an activation code. However, the code is being rejected when I try to enter it on my server.

Could you please advise on how to resolve this issue?

Best regards,

    Hi Domic,

    Thank you for your response.

However, the code I received from my supplier was already accepted by the Microsoft CAL activation process, and I can no longer reuse it to request a new license.

I am concerned that if I remove the activated license from the server, I may lose the CALs.

Could you please confirm the safest way to proceed in this situation?

    Best regards,

    Laurent

    Hi Menard, Laurent (GE Vernova),

The rejection of your CAL activation code typically occurs because the Install Licenses Wizard is configured with an incorrect License Program. You must ensure that the selection in the dropdown menu such as Retail, Open License, or Enterprise Agreement matches the specific documentation provided with your purchase. If there is a discrepancy between the purchase channel and the wizard selection, the Remote Desktop Licensing Manager, accessible via licmgr.exe, will fail to validate the key. Additionally, verify that your license server has been activated and displays a green checkmark in the management console. An unactivated license server cannot generate the unique Server ID required to bind with your CALs, which often results in a generic rejection error.

If the configuration is correct but the code continues to fail, the issue may lie with the connection method or a specific database corruption. You should change the connection method in the server properties from Automatic to Telephone. This allows you to bypass potential internet-based validation hurdles and provides the necessary details to contact the Microsoft Clearinghouse. A representative can then manually verify your entitlement and provide a License Key Pack ID that you can enter directly into the wizard. This manual override is the most reliable way to resolve persistent activation failures or to handle situations where the CALs might need to be downgraded to match your specific server environment.
