Windows cannot be activated without either a digital license or a 25-character product key.
Use this path to check what is available on the laptop:
- Open Settings:
- Windows 11: Start > Settings > System > Activation
- Windows 10: Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation
- Check the activation status.
- If the device already has a digital license, Windows can activate online without entering a product key.
- If the device was previously activated with a digital license, reinstalling the same edition of Windows can activate automatically after setup.
- If Windows is not activated, run the Activation troubleshooter:
- Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot
- This option is available only when Windows 10 is not activated, and an internet connection is required.
- If the laptop had major hardware changes, activation may fail. Linking a Microsoft account to the digital license helps reactivate Windows after significant hardware changes.
- If the laptop was bought used, repaired, rebuilt, or came with an invalid key, the installed key may have been used on more devices than allowed. In that case:
- Ask the seller for the original Windows DVD and product key.
- If that is not available or still does not work, a new product key or another copy of Windows is required.
If the laptop was store-bought but shows a Volume_KMS Client license, that is not a valid personal retail license and is not intended for resale. In that case, contact the seller with the purchase receipt or obtain a legitimate Windows license.
