Dear all,

I am writing to request your assistance regarding a problem I am experiencing when trying to access my Outlook email account.

When trying to log in, the following message appears: “You have tried to log in too many times with an incorrect account or password.”

I have tried to regain access by following the usual steps, but the problem persists, so I require your help to reset or unlock my account.

I would appreciate it if you could guide me on the steps to follow or arrange for the restoration of access as soon as possible, as I need to use my email for important activities.

I await your response.

    Dear @Wilson Anna

The message you are seeing, "You have tried to log in too many times with an incorrect account or password," usually appears when multiple unsuccessful sign-in attempts have been detected. This is a security measure designed to protect your account from unauthorized access.

    • Is the affected account a personal Microsoft account (Outlook.com, Hotmail.com, Live.com) or a work/school Microsoft 365 account?
    • When you attempt to sign in, do you receive any additional error messages or error codes besides the one mentioned?
    • Are you able to access the account from any other device, browser, or email application?
    • Are you currently using a VPN, proxy, or accessing the account from a new location or device?
    • Whether the issue occurs when signing in through Outlook on the web, the Outlook desktop application, or both

In this case, I recommend waiting for a short period before attempting to sign in again (Wait at least 15 to 30 minutes). Once you try again, please ensure that you are using the correct email address and password.

Sometimes stored credentials can cause issues. Therefore, I recommend you:

    • Clear browser cache and cookies.
    • Try signing in using an Incognito/Private window.
    • Try a different browser or device.

If you can't sign into your Microsoft account, most issues can be identified by our sign-in helper tool. You can refer to this article: I can't sign in to my Microsoft account

If this is a work or school account managed by your organization, you may need to contact your IT administrator, as they can verify whether the account has been locked and assist with resetting your password or restoring access.

Note: If you do not know who your IT admin is, please refer to How do I find my Microsoft 365 admin?

I hope the information shared is helpful. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out. I'm looking forward to your update.

This message usually means the account has been temporarily blocked by Microsoft’s security systems because of repeated sign-in attempts or unusual activity.

    Recommended steps:

    1. Stop repeated sign-in attempts for now. Repeated retries can keep the block active.
    2. Start with the Microsoft Sign-in Helper. It checks the account and guides the next recovery step.
    3. If the account is an Outlook.com or Microsoft personal account, use the unblock flow from Sign-in Helper.
    4. If prompted for a security code, any phone that can receive text messages can be used; it does not need to already be associated with the account. The code expires after 10 minutes.
    5. If the password may have been changed or the account was accessed by someone else, use Forgot my password on the sign-in page, then choose I think someone else is using my Microsoft account.
    6. If normal reset steps do not work, complete the Account recovery form. For the best chance of success, complete it from a device and location previously used with that account.
    7. If the sign-in page does not show a Next option and instead indicates the account is locked, use the aka.ms/ link shown in that window to submit the account reinstatement request. After submitting, do not send duplicate requests because that can slow review.

    Important limits:

    • If two-step verification is turned on and none of the alternate verification methods are accessible, support cannot reset or change the account details.
    • If the issue is only in Outlook mobile, updating to the latest Outlook mobile app can help if recurring password prompts started after app security standards changed.

After access is restored, review recent sign-in activity on the Security basics page and change the password if any activity is not recognized.
