Hi, apo thecary
Since the brightness slider is visible but has no effect, Windows may not be communicating correctly with the built-in screen. This can involve the monitor device, HDR settings, or the laptop’s firmware controls.
Besides the solutions provided by the Q&A Assist, here are some suggestions you can try:
Open Device Manager, expand Monitors, and check whether Generic PnP Monitor is disabled. If you see a small down-arrow, right-click it and select Enable device, then restart the computer. An incorrectly detected or disabled monitor can prevent brightness control.
Perform a full power reset. Shut down the laptop, unplug the charger and other connected devices, then hold the power button for about 20 seconds. Reconnect the charger and start it again. This may reset the hardware controller that manages the screen backlight.
Temporarily turn off HDR under Settings > System > Display > HDR, if that option appears, then test the brightness slider again. HDR uses separate display processing and brightness behavior.
Visit the laptop manufacturer’s support page and install any available BIOS, firmware, chipset, or hotkey utility updates for the exact model.
If it still does not work, please provide the laptop make/model, Windows version from winver, and what appears under Device Manager > Monitors.
Thank you for your patience in reading, I hope this information has been helpful to you.
