    Hi Sandbank,

If the password is not accepted, I recommend first confirming whether the account is a Microsoft account or a local account. If it is a Microsoft account, try signing in to your account from another device to verify that the password is correct and reset it if necessary.

If you are unable to regain access or if Reset this PC does not complete successfully, I recommend using a Surface USB recovery drive. This method reinstalls Windows using an official recovery image from Microsoft and can often help when the built-in reset options are unavailable or fail.

To use a Surface USB recovery drive:

    1. On another Windows PC, download the recovery image for your Surface model from Microsoft.
    2. Create a recovery USB drive using a USB flash drive with at least 16 GB of storage.
    3. Connect the recovery USB drive to the Surface and make sure the device is connected to power.
    4. Turn off the Surface completely.
    5. Press and hold the Volume Down button, then press and release the Power button.
    6. When the Surface logo appears, release the Volume Down button.
    7. The Surface should boot from the USB drive. Follow the on-screen instructions to reinstall Windows.

Please note that this process removes personal files, apps and settings.

I hope this helps. If you encounter any issues during the reset or recovery process, please let me know what happens or if you receive any error messages, I will be happy to assist further.

If the password does not work, try retrieving or resetting it before resetting the Surface. If the device still cannot be accessed, use one of these reset paths:

    1. From the sign-in screen:
      • Press Windows logo key + L if needed to return to the lock screen.
      • Hold Shift and select Power > Restart.
      • On Choose an option, select Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.
    2. If Windows still starts normally:
      • For Windows 11: Start > Settings > System > Recovery > Reset PC.
      • For Windows 10: Start > Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Get started under Reset this PC.
    3. Choose the reset option:
      • Keep my files: reinstalls Windows and keeps personal files, but removes installed apps, drivers, and settings changes.
      • Remove everything: removes personal files, apps, settings, and installed drivers.
    4. When prompted, choose Cloud download or Local reinstall. Cloud download is recommended, and the Surface should be connected to the internet.

    Important:

    • A reset removes apps that were installed later.
    • If planning to sell, recycle, donate, or send the device for replacement, use Remove everything and choose to fully clean the drive. This is more secure but can take 1–2 hours.
    • Have product keys and installation files ready for desktop apps that need to be reinstalled afterward.

If reset fails or the Surface keeps returning to Choose an option, try a Surface USB recovery drive instead. This reinstalls Windows, deletes personal files, resets settings, and removes installed apps.

If the Choose an option screen appears again after reset and Windows does not start, the Surface needs service.
