Outlook Classic stopped autocompleting email addresses and won't restart doing so

Outlook Classic stopped autocompleting email addresses. Following the instructions in other posts, I confirmed that the box was checked to autocomplete in options. I then told Outlook to empty the current list and also forced a creation of a new roamcache folder. But after I've sent an email to another email address of mine and also one to my wife, autocomplete is not filling in when I try to send a second email to those email addresses. I don't want to have to find and enter everyone's address every time I send an email; it's bad enough that I'll have to do it manually the first time I again send someone an email. Suggestions, please?

    Hi Alan Zarky,

Since AutoComplete is enabled and you've already rebuilt the cache, it may be worth checking whether Outlook is successfully resolving and saving recipient information outside of the AutoComplete feature itself.

You can try these additional checks:

1, Verify Offline Address Book synchronization

    • In Outlook, select Send/Receive > Send/Receive Groups > Download Address Book.
    • Complete the download and restart Outlook.
    • Test by sending a message and checking whether the address is suggested afterward.

    2, Check Contacts integration

    • Open one of the recipients that should appear in AutoComplete.
    • Save the address as a contact if it is not already.
    • Start a new message and type the recipient's name to see whether Outlook can resolve it from Contacts.

3, Test with a new Windows user profile

    • Create a temporary local Windows account.
    • Configure Outlook and send a few test messages.
    • If AutoComplete works there, the issue may be related to profile-specific settings within Windows rather than Outlook data itself.

If the behavior persists, please let us know:

    • Your Outlook version and build number (File > Office Account > About Outlook).
    • Whether you're using a Microsoft 365, Outlook.com, IMAP, or Exchange account.
    • Whether the issue affects all recipients or only newly entered addresses.

That information may help narrow down what is preventing new AutoComplete entries from being saved.

Since AutoComplete is enabled, the list was emptied, and the RoamCache folder was already recreated, the next supported checks are:

    1. Test whether an add-in is blocking Outlook from saving new AutoComplete entries.
      • Close Outlook.
      • Press the Windows key, type outlook.exe /safe, and press Enter.
      • Send a test message to an address not in Contacts, then start a new message and type that address again.
      • If AutoComplete works in safe mode, an add-in is likely interfering.
    2. If iTunes is installed, disable the Outlook Change Notifier add-in.
      • In Outlook, go to File > Options > Add-Ins.
      • At the bottom, select Go....
      • Clear Outlook Change Notifier.
      • Select OK.
      • This add-in is documented as causing Outlook not to shut down gracefully, which can prevent AutoComplete from working correctly.
    3. Repair the Outlook profile.
      • The Outlook profile includes AutoComplete information.
      • If AutoComplete still does not rebuild after sending test messages, repairing the profile is a supported next step.
    4. Repair the Outlook program.
      • If the profile repair does not help, repair classic Outlook.
      • This can take up to about half an hour.
    5. If needed, create a new Outlook profile.
      • This is the heavier option, but it is a standard next step when AutoComplete and profile data are not functioning correctly.

    Notes:

    • Clearing the AutoComplete list or renaming RoamCache removes stored suggestions, so the list must rebuild from messages sent afterward.
    • Renaming RoamCache causes loss of all addresses previously stored in AutoComplete.
