Try this end-to-end checklist for a Surface Laptop that will not charge after the standard fixes:
- Check the power source and charger connection.
- Try a different wall outlet.
- Make sure all cable connections are fully seated.
- If the Surface Connect power supply has a USB charging port, make sure nothing is plugged into it.
- Disconnect accessories that draw a lot of power.
- Confirm the charger is appropriate for the device.
- Surface Laptop (1st Gen) and Surface Laptop 2 require a minimum of 39W.
- If the battery icon shows an exclamation mark, the device is getting power, but not enough to charge. Use the power supply designed for that Surface model.
- Check the charger LED and charging method.
- If charging through Surface Connect, the LED should be on when connected.
- If the LED is off, the power supply may be the problem.
- If charging through USB-C, use the USB-C troubleshooting guidance for Surface.
- Force a restart.
- Select Start > Power > Shut down.
- Wait a moment.
- Press and hold the power button for 20 seconds.
- If the logo appears after a few seconds, keep holding until the logo appears again.
- Check the battery icon status and follow the matching fix.
- Plugged in, not charging: use the correct power supply, disconnect accessories, then reinstall the battery driver.
- Not plugged in even though the charger is connected and the connector light is on: remove the charging connector, flip it over, reconnect it securely, wait 10 minutes, then check again.
- Plugged in, charging but still inconsistent: clean the charger connector pins with a pencil eraser, then use a cotton swab with rubbing alcohol, let the pins dry fully, and reconnect.
- Battery not detected (red X) and the device turns off when unplugged: start a service request.
- Reinstall the battery driver.
- Warning: Do not do this on Surface Pro X. On that device, uninstalling drivers can require a full reset to restore them.
- Plug in the Surface.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Batteries.
- Open Microsoft Surface ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery or Surface Battery.
- On the Driver tab, select Uninstall device > OK.
- Select the computer at the top of Device Manager.
- Select Action > Scan for hardware changes.
- Restart: Start > Power > Restart.
- Check updates in the Surface app.
- Open the Surface app.
- Expand Help & support.
- If updates are available, select Check for updates to open Windows Update and install them.
- Use Get help in the Surface app to run device checks.
- If it still will not charge after all of the above, use one of the repair options:
- Self-repair if technically experienced and equipped.
- Send to Microsoft by creating a service order and shipping the device.
- In-person support through an Authorized Service Provider where available.
